Some battles don’t end when service does.

For many veterans, the impact of what they’ve seen and experienced follows them home. It’s not always visible. But it’s real and it deserves to be acknowledged and treated with care.

Veterans should receive the same level of support and commitment they gave to this country. That includes access to mental health care, peer support, and programs that help them rebuild and reconnect on their own terms.

This June, during PTSD Awareness Month, AMVETS is reminding every veteran: you are not alone, and you never have to fight in silence.

81 years ago today, a promise was made to America’s veterans.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, also known as the G.I. Bill, into law on June 22, 1944. It opened the door to education, housing, and opportunity for millions of veterans returning from World War II.

It wasn’t just a policy shift. It was a promise: those who serve deserve the chance to build a better life when they return home.

At AMVETS, we’ve carried that promise forward by helping veterans navigate the benefits they’ve earned, expand access to education, and continue building their lives after service. That includes offering free assistance with filing VA claims, so no veteran has to face a complex system alone.

We honor the leaders who had the foresight to sign this historic legislation into law, and we remain committed to protecting and strengthening the benefits it made possible.

The G.I. Bill transformed generations. And we’re still fighting to ensure its legacy lives on and reaches every veteran.
