Dolly Parton is someone I have always admired and respected. She came from a poor family in the mountains of Tennessee and carved an interesting and inspiring path through this world, helping hundreds and impacting countless lives. She became one of the most successful women in music, in an age when women were disrespected, sexualized and mistreated. She held beauty with class and stayed true to herself. She had an emotional depth that is rare, a tender heart that experienced a lot of hurt, and a self-lessness that shined. Dolly Parton isn’t just a pioneer for women but for anyone looking to be their authentic selves---their simple true self. We are each given gifts in this life, and she definitely invested hers to better the lives of many. She acted in movies, was a prolific singer songwriter, built a major entertainment business including a theme park, started non-profits and gave away substantial amounts of money to charity, received numerous awards (including the Presidential Medal of Freedom) and overall was a powerful force to be reckoned with in a time when sexual harassment was the expectation and men held most of the power. She came from humble beginnings and built her fame and fortune herself---using her success not to live comfortably but to create opportunities for others. She experienced a lot of hurt and setbacks; and in an industry where people are fake, Dolly embodied love, class, beauty, talent and style and did it while staying true to herself. And for this I will always love Dolly.
