She was pregnant, paralyzed, and bleeding on the side of the road after a hit-and-run. But the devastating injuries to her spine were only the beginning of this little mother’s tragedy 💔

We received an emergency call about a female street dog who had been struck by a vehicle and left helpless on the roadside. Thankfully, the people who called us had moved her to safety, but when our team arrived, we immediately knew something was terribly wrong. She couldn’t move her back legs, she was bleeding, and her swollen belly suggested she was pregnant.

We rushed her for emergency X-rays, which confirmed our worst fears. Jivika had suffered a spinal fracture, leaving her paralyzed. But another tragedy was unfolding. She was bleeding from her reproductive tract, and later that night, she went into premature labor.

With our veterinary team helping her through the emergency, Jivika delivered her tiny, undeveloped puppies. Tragically, none survived. This poor little mother had not only suffered a devastating spinal injury but had also lost every one of her babies 💔

Jivika is now safe at our sanctuary clinic, recovering from an ordeal no animal should ever have to endure. We don’t yet know whether she will regain the use of her back legs, but we will do everything possible to give her a future filled with love, comfort, and care. Once she has recovered sufficiently, she will also be spayed.

Please help us help Jivika. We receive emergency calls and rescue injured, sick, and abandoned animals every single day. The need never stops, and neither do the medical expenses. Jivika will require ongoing veterinary treatment, nursing care, and rehabilitation, and we desperately need your support to continue helping animals like her.

He was terrified of people, yet the horrific, maggot-infested wound covering almost his entire back desperately needed treatment.

This frightened little street dog had a massive, infected wound stretching from his neck across almost his entire back. Parts were incredibly deep, with dead tissue and maggots buried inside. He must have been in terrible pain, yet he was too frightened to allow anyone near him.

We desperately tried to coax him towards us, but he kept running. Even his regular feeder couldn’t touch him. We couldn’t leave him suffering, so we had no choice but to use a rescue net. We hate frightening an already terrified dog, but he needed urgent help.

Once he was safely inside our rescue rickshaw, we immediately began treating the maggot infestation so the maggots could be removed when we reached the clinic. Our veterinarian carefully removed them, cleaned the infection and cleared away necrotic tissue. Only then could we see just how deep the wounds went and how much tissue had been damaged. It was horrendous, but we have treated worse, and we know healing is possible.

Keslang is also terribly thin and needs to regain his strength. He remains frightened and defensive, making wound care difficult for our team. Yet after only a day or two of treatment, we’re already seeing improvement. Wounds this severe take time, medication and dedicated daily care.

We refused to leave Keslang suffering on the streets, and we won’t give up on him now.

He was just a frightened little pup, too scared to trust the hands reaching out to save him.

When some kind people spotted Marley, they immediately called us for help. An enormous area of skin had been torn away from his shoulder down to his elbow, with painful injuries on both of his little paws. His body was also covered in old, healed scars, telling us just how much suffering this young pup had already endured. He was terribly thin, infested with hundreds of ticks, and frightened of anyone approaching him.

We don’t know what happened to Marley, although his injuries suggest he may have been dragged. Frightened and in pain, he was understandably wary of our rescuers. But with patience and gentle reassurance, he finally allowed our team to lift him into their arms and carry him to safety.

At our veterinary clinic, Dr. Lucia carefully examined Marley, cleaning the dirt and debris from his extensive wounds. Removed hundreds of ticks. Thankfully, there were no fractures, but the loss of skin is so severe that the largest wound cannot simply be stitched closed. Healing will take many weeks, possibly months, of careful wound management, medication, and nutritional support.

Marley is still just a puppy. He should be discovering a world filled with kindness and love, not learning how to survive unimaginable pain. We cannot change whatever happened to him, but we can make sure the rest of his story is different.

This poor dog had reached the point where he simply had nothing left to fight with. He lay collapsed on the ground, exhausted and defeated, after enduring a level of pain we can barely imagine. A horrific bite wound had almost completely destroyed his ear. It was packed with dirt and debris, severely infected, crawling with maggots and filled with dead, necrotic tissue.

We know many of our posts lately have been especially graphic, and we are sorry. But this is the reality of street dogs in Nepal, and it is the reality for us as a rescue. It is mating season, and with mating season come fights and terrible wounds. For the next several months, we know we will see injuries like this again and again.

Back at our clinic, our team immediately began the painstaking process of cleaning and treating Dhair’s wound. He received fluids, pain relief, medication and all the supportive care he needed. Sadly, the damage to his ear is extensive, and we know that most of it will be lost.

But despite how terrible his wound looks, we have hope. Apart from this devastating injury, Dhair’s overall body condition is quite good. He still has strength, and we believe he can recover. His wound will require repeated cleaning and dressing, medication, careful monitoring and weeks of dedicated medical care, but we will be there for him every step of the way.

When we found Dhair, he had nothing left to fight with. So for now, we will fight for him.
Dhair has suffered enough. Please help us give him everything he needs to heal and finally know what it feels like to live without this pain.

UPDATE ON RIJU
Yesterday we introduced you to Riju, the street dog found with both sides of his mouth torn apart, his face enormously swollen and his wounds severely infected. Today, we discovered there was even more damage hidden beneath those terrible wounds.

We had been watching Riju closely and became increasingly concerned because he was continuing to bleed, particularly around his eye. This morning we took him for X-rays, which revealed a sharp, displaced fragment of fractured bone in his cheek area. Because of its position and the continued bleeding, Riju needed emergency surgery to remove it.

The fractured piece of bone was successfully removed today, and already we have seen a huge difference. The bleeding has stopped, he appears much more comfortable, and we are hopeful that removing the displaced bone will now give his wounds a much better chance to heal.

Riju still has a long road ahead of him. His facial wounds remain severe, and he will continue receiving antibiotics, pain relief and intensive wound care while we closely monitor his recovery. But after everything this poor boy has endured, we are incredibly relieved to see him more comfortable.

We have seen some terrible wounds, but when we saw this poor dog’s face, we simply couldn’t believe he was still alive.

Both sides of Riju’s mouth had been torn apart, with the wounds extending almost all the way toward his ears. The tissue was necrotic and severely infected, and the smell coming from the wounds was horrendous. His entire face was swollen like a balloon, his eyes were almost completely closed, and one of his ears was filled with maggots.

We have no idea what happened to Riju or what could have caused injuries like these. He was severely dehydrated and, with his mouth in this condition, had barely been able to eat or drink. We rushed him straight to our veterinary clinic, where he was immediately given pain medication and IV fluids.

Our team began carefully cleaning the wounds, removing the dead and infected tissue and taking out the maggots while treating the infection and trying to bring down the severe swelling. His wounds cannot be sutured in their current condition. For now, they must remain open while we control the infection and give the tissue a chance to begin healing.

After several hours of treatment, with his pain finally under control, Riju began to drink. And then he started to eat. It was an enormous relief, but Riju remains in a very serious condition. This is only the beginning of his treatment, and we don’t yet know what the coming days will bring.

What we do know is that Riju is no longer suffering alone. He is safe at Soltis’ Hope, and we will give him every chance we possibly can.
