Don't forget to find a bee today and say thanks! 🐝

It's simple:
Bees pollinate one third of the human diet, but human action is harming bees, and harm to bees harms us.

So let's stop this madness!!

Here are three very simple things we can do—in our own communities and at home—to show them our gratitude:

1. Plant native wildflowers.
2. Let your grass grow.
3. Stop using pesticides.

Bees help us, so let's help them to keep spreading the love. 💛

I don't wanna brag, but we have some of the fattest, cutest dandelions I've ever seen in our backyard.

Let's celebrate the dandelions! Go smell a dandelion, let its fuzzies yellow your face and fingers, gaze at its detail, give it a nibble. They offer so many wonderful things. 💛

Lots of dandelion projects ahead—emulsions, paints, dyes, prints. Many opportunities with the sweet dandies!

Ignoring the lines!

Chalk playtime shifted from the bricks to the whole yard when my 19-month-old found a stick to color. Then she found a rock by our lilac tree, and a few more rocks, and then some wood chips. Our frequent chalk sessions evolved, thanks to her endless curiosity.

I get so smitten with my daughter—somehow more than I already am every moment of every day—when she independently starts collecting pieces of nature. Like mother like daughter. 😍

I love watching a little artist recognize an opportunity to expand outside the familiar. When they get comfortable with a set of materials and feel ready to cross into a new territory.

All kids should be encouraged to reimagine the "boundaries" of art, and get messy!!

Nature’s own darkroom. 🌞

Printmaking with the sun by turning turmeric into light-sensitive concoctions. It’s a bit of STEAM and a lot of magic. 🧑🏽‍🔬

Showing makers that Mama Earth continues to share and provide what we need, this time in the form of creative expression — just sunlight, kitchen spices, and a little bit of patience. 🍃

I spent the summer of 2018 leading community art programming with Artists Working In Education in Milwaukee parks, and I've been thinking a lot about it as I move into a season of sunny art-making. ☀️

These gatherings were the truest all-ages programming I’ve ever experienced—newly walking toddlers to college-bound teenagers, creating alongside each other. Kids who joined us lived down the block or across the street, which made everything feel so deeply collaborative, even if kids didn't know each other and projects were independent. 👩🏿‍🤝‍👨🏻👩🏽‍🤝‍👩🏻👨🏽‍🤝‍👨🏼

My favorite project was super open-ended: we'd dump loads of recyclables, some duct tape, scissors, and assorted craft supplies on a massive tarp, and just let the kids go at it. We offered very little instruction, mostly because they knew exactly what to do and adult intervention only held them back. And they always showed us they were literal creative geniuses. 🎨🖌️

It's awesome and inspiring to watch imagination explode, when kids dive into materials without any sort of direction or plan—just moving from one idea to the next, consulting grown-ups just to problem solve or supplement their fine motor skills.

Sometimes there were about 40 kids running in and out at various intervals and it was occasionally pure chaos. But it was easily one of the best summers I've ever had. 🥰

Ever since then, I've had my heart set on recreating that in my own way—the magic of posting up in a green space, offering young people the tools to lead their own creative journeys.

Now I'm bringing that energy to the Yawkey House Garden in just a couple of months. 😃

With summer registration officially open, I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself to the new faces here 😊

I'm Lauren, a Wisconsin-born artist, community-based educator, mama, and the heart behind Calla Terra Studios.

I’ve spent my career working in the arts and culture sector — from my background in arts business and nonprofit art education to my own practice as an abstract painter. Interspersed over those 20ish years has been the amazing and energizing joy of working with youth. 🤸🏽‍♀️

My husband and I moved to Wausau in 2023 from Milwaukee, driven by a desire to be closer to the nature that was so engrained in our childhoods. I’ve felt so fortunate to weave myself into this community alongside , , , , health department, and Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Committee.

Calla Terra is where my four greatest loves meet: nature, art, youth, and community. This path started years ago during my graduate studies in Community Arts, when I learned about the transformative opportunities in public, inclusive, socially engaged art. 👨🏽‍🤝‍👨🏼👩🏿‍🤝‍👨🏻👩🏽‍🤝‍👩🏻

I then experienced it firsthand when developing and managing an environmental arts program at during the pandemic. That solidified my dream to start my own eco-arts endeavor in a midsized, nature-centered Wisconsin community.

My philosophy is fairly simple: I believe nature is our first classroom, art is essential in education, and young people are our future.

My 18-month-old daughter is my inspiration for working towards a sustainable and healthy future. Everything I do is with the next generation in mind. They deserve it.

I’m so grateful to be part of our creative community and sustainability efforts here in Wausau, and ecstatic to start this new, long awaited chapter in my career. Thank you for letting me be a part of your children's lives. ❤️
