This letter was sent out from The Grand Lodge of Texas Committee on Information Technology. It is lengthy but I encourage everyone to read it. Being watchful and cautious could save you, your Lodge and our Fraternity money and trouble. Thank You. _______________
Brethren,
We have recently received reports that several Brethren across Texas have been targeted by fraudulent emails and text messages from individuals impersonating Grand Lodge Officers, District Deputy Grand Masters, and others.
These scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated. The individuals responsible often use accurate names, titles, Lodge affiliations, and references to current Masonic events to make their communications appear legitimate. Please do not assume that a message is authentic simply because it contains familiar information.
These fraudulent communications typically create a false sense of urgency and attempt to pressure recipients into taking immediate action before verifying the request.
Please be alert for the following warning signs:
• Requests to purchase gift cards, send money, or transfer funds on behalf of a Brother or any Officer
• Requests for passwords, account information, personal data, or financial information
• Messages that demand immediate action or claim the matter is urgent and confidential
• Emails or text messages originating from unfamiliar, suspicious, or slightly altered contact information
Please remember: No Grand Lodge Officer, District Deputy Grand Master, Lodge Officer, or authorized representative of the Grand Lodge of Texas will ever request gift cards, money, passwords, banking information, or other sensitive personal information through email or text message.
If you receive a suspicious communication:
Do not respond to the message.
Do not click any links or open attachments.
Do not provide any information or send any funds.
Verify the request by contacting the individual directly using a trusted phone number or known contact information.
Notify your Worshipful Master or Lodge Secretary so that other members may be alerted.
We respectfully ask all Lodge Secretaries and Officers to share this information with their membership through Lodge communications and during upcoming stated meetings.
By remaining vigilant and exercising caution, we can help protect our Brethren, our Lodges, and the integrity of our Fraternity.
Fraternally,
Committee on Information Technology
Grand Lodge of Texas
