Help Preserve the Legacy of Alpha Chi Chapter!

The Oh-So-Fly Alpha Chi Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. on the campus of University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff holds a special place in history. Alpha Chi was the first Divine Nine sorority chartered at AM&N College (now UAPB) on April 14, 1944.

Today, we are working to preserve and showcase that remarkable legacy by installing a beautiful stained-glass display featuring our shield on campus. This project will serve as a lasting tribute to the trailblazing women who came before us and inspire future generations of students.

We are only $2,661.70 away from reaching our goal, and we need your support to make this vision a reality.

Every donation, no matter the amount, helps us honor our history, celebrate our achievements, and ensure that the legacy of Alpha Chi continues to shine for years to come.

SWIM 1922 is a signature program of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. designed to address the alarming disparities in swimming ability and water safety education within the African American community. Studies show that African Americans are significantly more likely to drown than other populations, making water safety education a critical need.

Through our partnership with USA Swimming, Olympic swimmer Soror Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace has played an important role in teaching children, teenagers, and adults the fundamentals of swimming and water safety. Her dedication and expertise help participants build confidence in and around the water while learning lifesaving skills.

SWIM 1922 provides participants with essential swimming equipment, including goggles and towels, helping remove barriers that may prevent individuals from learning to swim. Through hands-on instruction and community engagement, participants gain valuable water safety knowledge and practical swimming skills.

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is committed to ensuring that African American families have access to swimming education and water safety resources. By teaching individuals of all ages how to swim, SWIM 1922 is helping to reduce drowning rates, promote healthy lifestyles, and create a lasting impact for future generations.

Together, we are making a difference—one swimmer at a time.

SWIM 1922 was created to address the unfortunate reality that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 10 people drown every day in the United States. Even more concerning, nearly 70% of African American children and 60% of Hispanic children do not know how to swim. African American children are also three times more likely to drown than their Caucasian peers.

Through a partnership with USA Swimming, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.'s SWIM 1922 campaign works to eliminate these disparities by educating communities about water safety and providing swim instruction. Olympians, swim professionals, and members of the sorority engage youth and families through hands-on learning experiences that promote confidence and safety in and around water.

Since its inception, SWIM 1922 has directly impacted nearly 20,000 individuals and continues to create opportunities that can positively affect generations to come. Programs are conducted annually from May through August as part of the sorority's national programming initiatives.

Our Goal

To strengthen USA Swimming's commitment to diversity and inclusion by breaking down barriers caused by limited access and exposure to swimming opportunities. Through community engagement and education, we aim to increase swim participation, improve water safety awareness, and reduce drowning rates within underserved communities.

Program Benefits
Provides opportunities for youth and adults within the African American community to learn water safety and swimming skills.
Reduces fear and apprehension associated with learning to swim.
Promotes confidence and lifelong water safety habits.
Opens minds and changes attitudes regarding African Americans and swimming.
Encourages healthier lifestyles through aquatic activities.
Helps decrease drowning rates by increasing water safety education and access to swim instruction.

Together, we can create safer communities, save lives, and ensure that every child and adult has the opportunity to learn this essential life skill.
