The Ivy Center for Education Future Engineers Project had a great time today at Pine Bluff High School with Mr. Calvin Thomas and his amazing scholars who are members of the JAG Career Association. These outstanding young people also participate in the Chick Fil-A Leadership Academy.

Dr. Charles Colen, chairman of the Department of Industrial Technology, Management and Applied Engineering at UAPB and Future Engineers Project Director for the Ivy Center along with a wonderful team of UAPB Students, Malachi McDonald(Ivy Center Alumni), Chasity Jackson and Amiah Grundy encouraged PBHS Scholars to think about careers in Engineering.

The high school scholars were divided into 3 groups led by UAPB Students and were given the following questions:

•If you could design anything to make your life easier, what would you create?
• What is one invention you wish existed but doesn't yet?
• What is your favorite piece of technology, and how do you think it works?
• If you could build something with unlimited money and resources, what would it be?
• What problem at your school would you solve using engineering?
• What everyday object do you think could be improved through better engineering?

Dr. Colen led the discussion and wrap up. The responses to the questions were Great! Our Scholars are so smart!

We had a good time and hope Mr. Thomas will invite us again!

Tonight, the Ivy Center’s Future Medical Professionals, “Club Scrub” October Workshop was all about Phlebotomy!

Our scholars got beyond the textbook and gained hands-on experience, learning about blood collection techniques, tourniquet placement, equipment, and the important role phlebotomists play in healthcare.

A special thank you to Jasmine Wells, Phlebotomy Director at Southeast Arkansas College (SEARK), for sharing her knowledge and giving our scholars an engaging, interactive experience.

Exposure + hands-on learning = possibilities! This is what Club Scrub is all about! Helping students see themselves in healthcare careers.

Hello Everyone!
The Ivy Center for Education’s Club Scrub October Workshop will introduce scholars in grades 7–12 to the important field of phlebotomy. The workshop will be held Tuesday, October 6, 2026, from 6:00–7:00 p.m. at the UAMS South Central Regional Campus located at 1601 West 40th (corner of 40th & Mulberry) in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
The guest speaker will be Jasmine Wells, Phlebotomy Director for the Health Professions program at Southeast Arkansas College (SEARK). A phlebotomist is a trained healthcare professional who draws blood from patients for medical testing, blood donations, transfusions, and research. Phlebotomists play an essential role in patient care by properly collecting, labeling, and handling blood specimens while helping patients feel safe and comfortable.
Through Ms. Wells’ presentation, scholars will learn about the responsibilities of a phlebotomist, the education and training required, and the career opportunities available in this growing healthcare field. The workshop will provide ssholars with valuable career exposure and encourage them to explore how their interests and skills can lead to a rewarding future in healthcare.
All participants are encouraged to arrive by 5:45 PM and enter the building from the rear. A light snack will be served.
