The external layer of a bale represents a substantial loss of yield and quality due to weathering. Storage losses can be reduced by two-thirds with indoor storage and by one-half with good outside covering.

Dear Jefferson County Beef/Hay Producers,

We are seeing fall armyworms at treatment levels in some areas of the state. I encourage you to scout your pastures and hayfields. Treatment is justified when a field has an average of 3 or more armyworms per square foot. Sweep netting is very useful in detecting their presence in the field and at detecting small worms (early instars). Attached is the one-page handout listing products and sampling methods.

Please be aware that tow trucks are generally unable to transport trailers containing livestock, and the potential risks associated with being stranded with overheating animals are significant.
