We help horses help people! We assist with funding for military families in need of physical therapy utilizing a horse as a tool. We are a registered 501c3

This page was originally created to share our story about our battle with government's military healthcare provider, TRICARE, regarding coverage of physical therapy for our daughter Kaitlyn. My husband Mark is a retired Navy Captain having served on active duty for over 24 years. Kaitlyn was born in 1996 with servere congenital brain abnormalities and suffers from severe scoliosis. TRICARE does no

t dispute that Kaitlyn is entitled to physical therapy, they just refused to cover it if Kaitlyn's PT used a horse as a therapy tool rather than a ball or a bolster. But Kaitlyn must hold herself up and participate in the therapy activities in order for them to work and after years of therapy she became bored and frustrated with the ball and intellectually could not understand the importance. However, on the horse she is engaged and excited to participate in the therapy exercises. This therapy does not cost TRICARE any more than therapy on a ball, but they recouped past payments from us and refused to cost share any more therapy if her physical therapist used the horse. We hired an attorney and appealed this decision. The DOD judge who heard our case agreed and found in our favor, however, TRICARE could still legally refuse to pay! Without this therapy Kaitlyn will require life altering surgery or she will die. We were graciously represented pro bono by Marcella Burke, Michelle Reed & Kendrea Tannis with the law firm Akin Gump. We settled our lawsuit with the DOD and received payment to cover approximately 5 years of therapy for Kaitlyn. We plan to continue to fight for Kaitlyn's Law to correct this problem for all military families.

I have recently joined the board of this amazing equine therapy center. Their horses serve disabled persons, veterans, first responders and counseling patients. Once retired they live onsite at Riding Unlimited. If you have a heart for horses, especially therapy horses, this is a very deserving organization 🐴♥️
