One of our hawk watch coordinators made a visit to the Pilot Mountain Hawk Watch run by Forsyth Audubon, and to the State Park Visitor Center in North Carolina last week! It was October 1st, a day after their last count day, but still seen that day, a soaring and stooping resident Peregrine Falcon, an American Kestrel flying and preening, a Sharp-shined Hawk, a late migrating Broad-winged Hawk blowing by the K**b, Ravens, and many local Black and Turkey Vultures soaring around all the while. The Visitors Center had excellent educational displays on migrating raptors, Monarch Butterflies and Dragonflies using the ridge and 'K**b' as a thermal help to migrate south.

We visited our fellow nearby Franklin Mountain Hawk Watch this past Saturday at their Open House! Beautiful day for Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society to conduct a raptor ID workshop, lead an interpretive nature walk on their preserve up the hill to the hawk watch, and invited Falcon Heart Rescue to educate attendees on their rehabilitated birds. The Binghamton University Audubon Campus Chapter brought attention to the mortality of bird-window collision with their fabric-bird craft, and attendees could play a migrating bird rolling some big dice in the field to learn about the perils of migrating birds! Students from the Union College Audubon Campus Chapter out of Schenectady made the trip down there as well!

"Sentries on the Wall at The Overlook" - With all the rain this week, we want to highlight the Audubon Society of the Capital Region who staffed the hawk watch on a beautiful sunny day on Monday! Observers Alex Cooley, Greg Mayo, and John Loz were counting raptors at Thacher State Park to record Broad-winged Hawks, a Northern Harrier, a Sharp-shinned Hawk, and a close flyby of a resident Peregrine Falcon. It perched on a snag on the escarpment cliffs giving us great long looks. Shout out to visitor and hawk ID-er, Steve Woods, who helped to confirm a couple of our birds!

We made the Sunday paper - again! What an incredible article by Collin Bolebruch of The Daily Gazette - Thank You for bringing attention to our founder Will Aubrey and all the volunteers from our 4 regional birding groups to run this 2+ week hawk watch in collaboration.

Wow! What an AWESOME Hawk Watch Fest w/ Thacher State Park this past Saturday! The birds keep coming! Yesterday Monday Sept 15th, we had a couple kettles (40 and 25) of Broad-winged Hawks form and float right above our counters under the Moon! Thanks to Terrie McKelvy from Schoharie County for capturing these images!
