On Tuesday Aug 25th, 2026 at 6:27am, we were paged to a report of a car vs train collision near the intersection of Hwy 210 & W Gull River Rd. One of our firefighters was on scene within 1 minute of our page. The vehicle came to rest on the south side of the tracks & the train had come to a stop.

Our firefighter was able to reach the lone occupant on the other side by crawling under the train. Unfortunately, the driver did not survive.

The train had been traveling Westbound and the vehicle was attempting to cross the tracks from South to North (heading towards Hwy 210).

We would like to thank the Cass County Sheriffs Office, North Ambulance, BNSF, Collins Brothers Towing, MN State Patrol & Brenny Funeral

It’s safe to say that in the fire service, we tend to give our fellow firefighters a fair amount of “ribbing” or “the raspberries” (aka: crap). If done tactfully (firefighters know what I mean), it actually builds camaraderie, trust & a level of fun.

But when those same firefighters go silent, or step back or don’t engage in those firehouse shenanigans, there’s a problem. It’s either the joking went too far or your teammate needs help.

Life can get overwhelming pretty quickly. Even quicker when you deal with some of the things we see & encounter.

When’s the last time you checked in with one of your fellow teammates? A text, a call or a “hey how are you doing?” after the next call can go a long ways.

We have been burning the candle at both ends. Today was no different. FIVE calls today for “our little community of Pillager Area”. We are currently at 256 runs for the year. This is up significantly compared to last year & we are on par to break 400 calls this year if this trend continues.

Here’s a glimpse into the day of 8/8/26 of a Pillager Area Firefighter/First Responder:

🚨3:00AM-Smoke Alarms going off at a group home; found to be faulty detectors
🚑10:30AM- 2.5 yo fell & is bleeding from the head
🦽7:59PM- male party fell and needs assistance getting off the floor
🚁9:04PM- male party’s legs trapped/crushed under a dock lift; need extrication & medivac
*video attached of Life Link III leaving the Landing Zone at our Station 2. This patient was ultimately transported via ground ambulance to Brainerd.

‼️ Air Quality Alert ‼️

Be careful out there, folks! Just in case you haven’t heard, northern Minnesota is burning up right now. There are over 20+ fires (of varying acreage) ripping through the BWCA, Tower/Orr Area & multiple other fires across the border in Canada.

They are working on getting more boots on the ground & more aviation assets up there to assist. The BWCA is CLOSED currently as they continue to evacuate campers.

At 21:14, we were paged to a report of a motorcycle accident, with injuries, on CR1 near Pillager Lake. Upon arrival, our responders found a single rider had lost control after hitting a deer at a high rate of speed.

Traffic was temporarily stopped while North Ambulance, our responders & two officers from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office helped the victim.

The rider was loaded & transported via ambulance to a landing zone nearby where Life Link III awaited. The rider was airlifted to St Cloud hospital.
