For more than five decades, Chief Jay Howell has been a dedicated servant and leader in North Carolina's fire service. Beginning his career with the Nahunta Volunteer Fire Department in 1969, he went on to serve as Fire Chief for 36 years, helping guide and strengthen his department while earning the respect of firefighters across the state.

A past President of the North Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs, former NCSFA Firefighter of the Year, and current Treasurer of the North Carolina State Firefighters' Association, Chief Howell has devoted his career to advancing the fire service at the local, state, and national levels. His leadership has also extended to the National Fire Protection Association, where he has represented volunteer fire departments in the development of national standards.

His lifetime of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to North Carolina's firefighters make him a truly deserving member of the Timothy L. Bradley Hall of Fame.

Thank you Chief Jay Howell for all you have done and continue to do for Nahunta Fire Dept, and departments across the county, state, and nation! Congratulations, Chief!

Public Notice: Live Fire Training Exercise
On Sunday, July 26, 2026, beginning at 7:00 a.m., local fire crews will be conducting a live fire training exercise in the 300 block of Polly Watson Rd

Due to the increased use of nearby fire hydrants during the training, residents in the area may experience temporary water discoloration. If discoloration occurs, it is expected to be temporary.

Fire crews are scheduled to remain on site until approximately 3:00 p.m.

Polly Watson Rd will be closed from Spencer Rd to Huckleberry Rd, if you are traveling through the area, please use caution and be mindful of emergency vehicles, equipment, and personnel.

It is with great sorrow that we share the passing of our retired firefighter & friend, Terry Sullivan.

We ask for prayers for our department, as well as Terry’s family and friends during this time! He will be greatly missed by all who knew him!

On Saturday, June 27, 2026, beginning at 7:00 a.m., local fire crews will be conducting a live fire training exercise in the 2000 block of NC 222 West in Fremont.

Due to the increased use of nearby fire hydrants during the training, residents in the area may experience temporary water discoloration. If discoloration occurs, it is expected to be temporary.

Fire crews are scheduled to remain on site until approximately 3:00 p.m.

Traffic on NC 222 is expected to remain open and operate as normal. However, if you are traveling through the area, please use caution and be mindful of emergency vehicles, equipment, and personnel.

The N.C. Forest Service has lifted their ban on all open burning in 81 counties effective 8am on May 3. With this news, Wayne County’s burn ban will also be lifted at the same time.

We’re still in a drought so please be careful if you decide to start a fire!
