Today was a big day at Western Pike Local Schools STEAM Career Day! Thank you, Jennifer Buckler and Brock Brewster for your big ideas you bring to life! Thanks to our grant from the Ohio State - Ohio 4-H Foundation, we were able to showcase 4-H by connecting more than a hundred projects to careers in agriculture, STEM, natural resources, food service and baking, finance, leadership, local government, and more! Thank you to all of our 4-H Ambassadors, Camp Counselors, and Volunteers who hosted stations and assisted with set-up and tear down. It was a great day connecting youth to potential future careers, promoting 4-H membership, and encouraging kids to come to 4-H Camp this summer!

Be prepared to prevent tick bites at camp!

Let's talk about ticks! 😲

We've all seen them. We've all heard it: "ticks are really bad this year!" At Canter's Cave, we do our best to help prevent tick bites as much as possible. As your child heads off to summer camp, we encourage you to take a few simple steps to help prevent tick bites.

👕Apply insect repellent to clothing before camp. Families can treat their camper's clothing ahead of camp with permethrin, which can help prevent ticks and mosquitos for weeks! Treating clothing ahead of time is one of the best ways to prevent tick bites. You can dress campers in light‑colored clothing with long sleeves and socks when possible.

🧍‍♂️Teach your camper how to do a full tick check each evening - especially behind the ears, along the hairline, groin, armpits, and around the waistband. Ticks like to hide in warm, moist areas of the body. If they find a tick attached to their body, instruct them to see the camp nurse.

🎒Pack plenty of insect repellent and teach your camper when to use it! Our staff and counselors will have plenty on hand, but it's important for campers to also have their own!

Camp staff will also be sharing prevention reminders so everyone can enjoy a healthy, happy camp experience! Check out this YouTube video from Ohio State University Extension with tips to stay tick safe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKOl-v1j_VM
