On this day in 1899, President William McKinley traveled nearly 1,400 miles by train to Aberdeen, South Dakota, to welcome home the Soldiers of the 1st South Dakota Infantry returning from the Philippines. An estimated 20,000 people gathered as he praised their bravery during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection.
The regiment had spent 126 consecutive days under fire—an achievement General Arthur MacArthur called unmatched in military history. McKinley continued his journey across the state, greeting Soldiers in several South Dakota towns and expressing the nation’s gratitude.
It was a historic visit from the first sitting President to come to South Dakota, honoring the service and sacrifice of the 1st South Dakota Infantry and the 62 Soldiers who never returned home.
