Celebrating Over a Century of International Women's Day!

International Women's Day is more than just a date on the calendar; it is a movement that continues to inspire change and foster inclusivity since 1911. It is a day to honor the achievements of women, from trailblazing leaders and innovators to everyday heroes in our communities. Furthermore, IWD is a time to reflect on the disparities that still exist and to renew our commitment to creating a more equitable world for all.

50 YEARS AGO TODAY, in 1974, WOMEN WON EQUAL ACCESS TO CREDIT when President Gerald Ford signed into law the Fair Credit Opportunity Act.

Until that time, banks were legally allowed to deny women credit, charge them higher interest if they failed to get a male cosigner, or give women smaller credit amounts than men with identical financial backgrounds. Many banks required single, divorced or widowed women to bring a man along with them to cosign for a credit card, and some discounted the wages of women by as much as 50% when calculating their credit card limits.”

When it was originally enacted in 1974, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act prohibited discrimination in credit transactions because of gender or marital status. On March 23, 1976 President Ford signed amendments that broadened the scope to bar creditor discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, age, receipt of public assistance, or exercise of credit rights under law.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY we celebrate Women’s Equality Day!

Women’s Equality Day marks the anniversary of the 19th Amendment’s certification in 1920, which granted women the right to vote in the United States. This day honors the tireless efforts of the suffragists who fought for women’s rights and highlights the ongoing struggle for gender equality. It’s a time to reflect on the progress made, recognize the work that still needs to be done, and celebrate the vital contributions of women to society.
