𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐔𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐤𝐨𝐭𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝! 🤩

Last year, hunters harvested 1.35 million pheasants — the highest harvest in 14 years — along with nearly 55,000 grouse across the state. And according to South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks’ newly released 2026 Upland Outlook, conditions are pointing toward another great upland season.

A mild winter, near-normal spring conditions and timely summer rainfall have helped create favorable grassland habitat across much of South Dakota’s pheasant range.

And that’s the part we love to hear. 🌾

Healthy bird populations don’t happen by accident. They start with habitat: grass on the landscape for nesting, brood-rearing, winter cover and everything in between. Every acre restored, retained and managed today helps protect South Dakota’s outdoor heritage for generations to come.

𝗕𝗢𝗔𝗥𝗗 𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗗𝗔𝗬 | 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻

Meet James Halverson, a member of the Second Century Habitat Fund Board of Directors and Chair of our Marketing Committee.

James and his wife are proud first-generation cow-calf producers, giving him firsthand experience with the opportunities and challenges facing South Dakota agriculture. In addition to ranching, he works in advocacy, campaign management, government relations, and public affairs.

James joined SCHF because he believes conservation works best when agricultural producers have a seat at the table.

As a producer currently navigating severe drought conditions, James has seen firsthand how habitat-focused conservation practices can strengthen both working lands and wildlife.

"Without organizations like Second Century Habitat Fund, implementing practices such as returning summer fallow wheat ground to a diverse grass and hay ecosystem would be very cost prohibitive. With their help, producers like me can make management decisions that benefit our operations as well as the greater ecosystem."

When he's not working or volunteering with SCHF, you'll find James ranching alongside his family or cheering on his kids as they pursue their dreams.

"If I'm not at work, I'm ranching or chasing my kids to help make their dreams come true. That's really all I do—and I wouldn't change a thing."

One of James' proudest moments with SCHF was being nominated to serve and elected as Chair of the Marketing Committee, where he helps guide how we share our mission and connect with supporters across South Dakota.

And here's a fun fact: James plays guitar—as he puts it, "mostly for myself."

Thank you, James, for sharing your leadership, agricultural perspective, and passion for conservation. Your commitment helps ensure that working lands remain productive while protecting the wildlife and habitats that make South Dakota special.
