Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County The Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, private animal shelter that serves all of Kosciusko County!

We take in strays and owner surrenders of dogs and cats! Come see our adoptable pets! An animal is admitted to our shelter in one of three ways. Many concerned community members who bring us lost animals in hopes we can locate their owner. We partner with both the City of Warsaw and Kosciusko County Animal Care & Control, who has 24/7 access to our facility to drop off a lost animal in a secure location. Finally, many of our fellow pet lovers surrender their animal to our care because changed life circumstances no longer allow them to give their pet the proper care. All animals that come into the care of the Animal Welfare League of Kosciusko County are immediately given a thorough assessment.
โ€ข Illness / Injury Assessment - We have the capacity to treat superficial illness and injury in-house. For more severe illness and injury, we partner with many local veterinarian offices. For our very young kitten and puppies, we have volunteer neo-natal caregivers who foster them until they are old enough or healthy enough to go up for adoption.
โ€ข Spay and Neuter Program: To control the countyโ€™s pet population, we spay or neuter every animal in need.
โ€ข Behavior Assessment: We do a behavior evaluation to determine how the animal is with people, dogs and cats.
โ€ข Vaccinations: We get them up to date on all necessary vaccines. This screening process can take anywhere from three days up to three months, depending on the condition of the animal when they arrive. For those animals who have existing issues we donโ€™t have the facilities to address, we partner with specialized breed rescues or participate in an animal exchange with another rescue organization, so we can give the animal the best chance at finding a fur-ever home. While the animal is waiting to be adopted, our dedicated volunteers help care and socialize our animals by taking them on walks or runs or spending quality time with them in one of our cuddle rooms. We take the utmost care in ensuring our adoptable animals are fit with the right family. When a potential family arrives at the shelter, they meet their possible fur-kid in one of our cuddle rooms. In cases where another pet is already in the home, we encourage them to bring in that pet for a meet and greet as well. Finally, we offer a trial adoption period where a potential owner can host the animal for a short time to ensure the animal is a good fit for their home. We are proud to say that, because of this program, our animal return rate has decreased significantly.

UPDATE: Dryer Lint has been adopted! ๐Ÿ˜

Meet Dryer Lint ๐Ÿฉถ

You might be wondering where this little cutie got her unique name. Well, she was found in a dryer hose, and she was so small, she looked like a little piece of lint! Our staff here are so creative, they put two and two together and boom ๐ŸŽ‰ Dryer Lint ๐ŸŽ‰

Heavy sarcasm on the creativity part ๐Ÿ˜‚

This cutie is 3 months old and is lovable, affectionate and so friendly! She is a sweetheart that loves to play! When you hold her, she either purrs and snuggles in or she turns gremlin mode and begs to be put down for zoomies โœจ She's a ball of fun!

Dryer Lint does well with kids and other cats!

Her adoption fee is only $25 and she is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and dewormed!

UPDATE: Oakley is awake and her surgery went well! Its recovery time โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน THANK YOU! And thank you so much Humane Society of Elkhart County for everything you do for us.

Oakley needs some positive thoughts and vibes sent her way. Please read with viewer discretion.

Today she is at the Humane Society of Elkhart County as part of our spay/neuter surgery run we have every Thursday. Their vet clinic has been AMAZING to us and the public, and we have worked with them each week since early 2025!

She was scheduled for a routine spay. When the vet opened her up, things changed very quickly.

Oakley has had puppies at some point in her life. She was found as a stray, and never claimed by someone, so we are not sure when. She was not pregnant currently, so it was a past litter.

One of those puppies never made it out and had ruptured outside of her uterus. That puppy is now mummified and tangled up in her intestines. Bones are freely floating in Oakley's abdomen.

Oakley's life is in danger and has been since that puppy ruptured. We just didnโ€™t know.

The vet team is doing everything they can for Oakley. They are removing as much as they can safely. We are hoping Oakley can make it through this now invasive and critical surgery.

Please spay and neuter your pets.
Oakley did not ever need to have puppies. Now her life is on the line. Imagine what would've happened if she continued to have them.
Pet overpopulation is REAL and it is a CRISIS.

We will update this post when we have updates.

Miss Liberty ๐Ÿ’œ

Liberty is a 2 year old absolute sweetheart that loves affection! She will want all the pets and is a total lovebug! โœจ

She can be a little shy at first but show her some affection and you'll be best friends! She LOVES pets, scratches, feather toys and boxes!

She doesn't mind other cats as long as they give her space and time to warm up to them! Slow introductions when bringing a cat home are always recommended!

Liberty came to us with that purple collar around her neck. We posted her a stray, held her for her stray hold but no one came for her. After three weeks in the shelter, Liberty is ready for a home of her own!

Boone says HEY THERE! ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘‹

Somehow this happy guy has been sitting in our shelter for 3 months.
Boone is friendly.
Boone is happy go lucky.
Boone loves life.
Boone is sweet and gives hugs.
Boone is handsome.
Boone likes dogs and kids!
Boone shows off his hunting skills.
Boone does hound howl.

Short sentences is how Boone thinks ๐Ÿ˜‚

Seriously, this guy is a bundle of fun! His only downfall is his coonhound instincts to chase cats, so he would do best in a cat free home! Otherwise, chefs kiss perfection.

He is 4.5 years old and is more than ready for a home of his own!
His adoption fee is $50 for the month of October! He is neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and microchipped.

UPDATE: Experienced foster secured! ๐Ÿ’œ We are always, always in need of fosters. Even though these kittens are secured, we will have more show up. We do have moms and kittens that need fosters. We do have older kittens that are not thriving well. If you are able to foster, please stop by!

๐Ÿšจ NEONATAL FOSTER NEEDED ASAP! ๐Ÿšจ

Three kittens are in need of foster homes! One was brought in Friday and two have made their way to us yesterday and today.

We estimate the kittens are 2-3 weeks old. Kittens are extremely fragile at this age and, without a mom, are dependent on human care and require specialized attention to survive.

We provide the supplies and medical care. You supply love, care and housing.

They will need dedicated, experienced fosters. At this age, they will require feedings every 2-3 hours.

If you are able, PLEASE call us asap at 574-267-3008 or message us!!

Foster applications will need filled out and those are done in person!

If Ramen could write about herself, it would look a little something like thisโ€ฆ

๐Ÿ“ข HELLO! The nameโ€™s Ramen and I am a 3.5 year old kitty that has a constant look of shock on my face. Probably because I came into the shelter with a pile of kittens in tow, they quickly got adopted, and I am STILL HERE six months later waiting for a home of my own!

Seriously, whatโ€™s up with that.

I am a good cat!
๐Ÿพ I knock things off shelves
๐Ÿพ I sit on your local newspaper so you canโ€™t read it
๐Ÿพ I help type on the keyboard to increase your work efficiency
๐Ÿพ I zoom around so you might trip
๐Ÿพ I hide my toys everywhere where you will step on them
๐Ÿพ I will stare at you with my wide, laser focused eyes until you feed me.
Because I am always hungry. Cat food, kitten food, wet food, churu treats, chicken nuggets, you name it and I'm eating it. ๐Ÿคค

As long as your children and resident cats respect that I run the house, I do well with them!

Just SOME of my personality traits include energetic, independence, curiousity, friendly, extroverted. I sure love to explore and make new friends.

Wait am I filling this out for a home or a dating profile? ๐Ÿค”

While I do make a wonderful office cat for the shelter, they are kinda getting tired of my very helpful assistance around here, so I need a home right meow!

Staff here. None of our posts, radio highlights and adoption events have scored Ramen a home. Maybe hearing it from Ramen herself will work ๐Ÿ˜‚

Come see her!

New Support Groups coming to AWL starting November 4th! Please read the flyers below for more information.

Stephanie Gonzalez, M.A. in Clinical Psychology, is an amazing, kind hearted and compassionate volunteer at AWL that wants to bring a Grief Support Group and a Stroke/Brain Injury Support Group to life at our animal shelter.

She moved to Indiana from Southern California in 2023 after recently losing both of her parents. She desperately searched for a grief support group here but couldn't find one. Then in 2024, Stephanie suffered a stroke. During her recovery, she once again found herself looking for a support group: a place to connect with others who understood what she was experiencing and where she could share her journey. She couldn't find one.

Now she is creating her own. She has the knowledge, the experiences and the passion to to help others in their time of need.

So why at AWL?
Stephanie began volunteering at AWL two years ago when she was searching for purpose and healing of her own. What she found was a connection and the unconditional love of animals.

In Stephanie's words:
"When I started volunteering with AWL, I needed purpose and healing. I have found that here. The love and care I give to the animals comes back to me in spades. I found what I was needing. The AWL has become a community and I am so grateful to the animals and staff that have witnessed my journey."

Animals are therapeutic. They offer comfort, connection, and unconditional love. And shelter animals need comfort, connection and unconditional love too while they wait to find families of their own.

๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ˜บ Those who attend these support groups can interact with shelter animals and spend some one on one time with them!

๐Ÿ“… Both groups begin November 4th but check the flyers for start times!
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Meetings will be held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month

Thank you Stephanie for turning your own experiences into an opportunity to help others. You are supported and loved by your AWL family ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ“ฃ Please share this with anyone who might benefit from these groups. You never know who may be looking for exactly this kind of support.
