Town team men’s softball was very popular in the 1970’s into the 1980’s. A recent donation of a Sully’s Tavern softball shirt to the Pierce Historical Society Museum brings back memories of the teams representing Pierce. Local teams, such as Sully’s, Donrel’s Food Town and Tom’s Service, plus others represented Pierce well. The Sully’s Tavern 1977 team, sponsored by Rich and Kathy Sullivan, according to a Pierce County Leader story, consisted of: Glenn Hahn, Dennis Hahn, Larry Fuerhoff, Gary Fuerhoff, Randy Fuerhoff, Doug Haas, Don Zimmerer, Jim Peters, Jim Herian, Rodger Warneke, Roger Buckendahl, Burnell Herbolsheimer, Rich Sullivan, Russ Retzlaff, Dan Meyer, Jim Miller and Rick Herian.

The question is who wore number 44. The donator said her husband didn’t play ball and said they didn’t know where it came from. Who are you #44?

The origins of Memorial Day traces back to the American Civil War when citizens placed flowers on the graves of those 600,000 Union and Confederate soldiers who had died. Pierce County was a location that quite a few Civil War veterans settled after the war. In July 1911, a reunion or also known as an encampment, of nearly 100 area war veterans gathered on grounds located south of Pierce. A panorama photo was taken by the Lincoln State Journal during event, a print is located at the Pierce Historical Society Museum. The photo included with this post shows only a portion of the photo. Take notice of the flags indicating a veteran as you visit the cemeteries. Have a blessed Memorial Day.

Please join the Pierce Historical Society for its monthly meeting on Thursday, May 21 beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the museum complex in Gilman Park. We will be making plans to celebrate our 50th anniversary of the museum complex.

We will not be serving watermelon like the photo of the “Stitch in Time” group sponsored by Grandma Brande (circa 1910’s-1920’s). But join us for an equally good time preserving the “History of Pierce”.

These hardworking young men worked today at the museum. They helped move storage tubs and clean the machinery building and blacksmith shop. They are members of the Pierce High Wrestling team and are earning money to wrestle in Florida in June. They are available for hire and we can attest to their friendly attitude and ethics. Thank you Kaiden, Cole, Xavier and Kyle.

It's been a busy week at the Pierce Historical Society Museum. Yesterday we hosted the Pierce Public School's 4th grade class. They got to experience what it was like attending a one room school and learn 250 years of Presidential trivia and what it was like traveling across the country in a covered wagon. They also explored the caboose and showed off the many hats we have on display. We believe they had a great time visiting the Museum.

Happy Mother's Day from the Pierce Historical Society! We love this photo from our glass negative file. It has the reflection of a mother looking at her children, circa 1921. The mother is Meta (Koehler) Herbolsheimer and her children Elaine and Myron.
