When you look at your weather app or watch a broadcast, you see a single number—like 100°. But behind that single digit is a whole spectrum of possibilities, with that number just being the most likely outcome.

Here’s a good example of how we look at the numbers behind the scenes:

On any typical mid-August day in Birmingham, the actual probability of hitting 100° is only about 5%. It’s pretty rare!

We’ve got a shot at touching 100° this Saturday, but by Monday? That probability explodes to nearly 70%.

At that point, arguing whether it’s going to be 99°, 100°, or 101° is splitting hairs—there’s virtually no difference in how it feels on your body. The big takeaway isn't the exact digit; it's that excessive, multi-day heat is settling in through next week and likely beyond.

Plan ahead now: limit afternoon outdoor work, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors.

⚠️HEADS UP for strong to severe storms this afternoon through tonight: A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) now exists across much of Central AL, with very unstable conditions & potential for "microburst" type wind gusts between 40 and 60mph within stronger storms.

(6/30, 10:30am): Along with the heat, we'll also have a few storms to deal with this afternoon & evening. Some storms will be capable of producing gusty "microburst" type winds between 40 & 60mph, that can occur very quickly. Folks with outdoor plans need to stay weather aware and take shelter when you hear thunder! We'll have a chance for these storms each afternoon/evening through the rest of the week.
