Driven with Purpose for PTSD Awareness

Driven with Purpose for PTSD Awareness DWP is focused on creating public awareness of Military related PTSD. My hope is that the G35 can be a tool to open the conversation about PTSD. Far too many.

Driven with Purpose(DWP) for PTSD Awareness is driving events, car shows and public events that combines our passion for automobiles with the love of our family and friends that are suffering from PTSD. With that love comes the desire to help by educating those suffering, those trying to understand PTSD and help those suffering from this life-altering disorder find resources and the help they need

. One goal of DWP is to bring awareness that seeking help for PTSD is not a sign of weakness, but rather a show a strength. For 2014, We are using a 2005 Infiniti G35 as a visual promotional tool for PTSD awareness at car shows, driving events, local car events and at military-related functions. I want to personally serve as a source of information and understanding due to my personal struggles with this disorder over the last ten years. I exhibited behaviors so common with PTSD and it wasn't until I was hurting my friends, family and, ultimately, myself that I realized that I did not have control over this invasive disorder. I knew that it was seek help or lose my family. I then sought treatment and came to terms with my own reality: my weakness was only in not getting help while strength and empowerment came through information and counseling. But why do I want to raise awareness of PTSD? Well, I knew what the handouts said the symptoms were but I did not see them in myself. I needed my network of support to know and understand the signs of the disease and recognize them in me. In my quietest moments I knew there was a problem. But when I was at a point of losing it all because of my behavior, I searched, begged and tried to reach out for help but was unable to find it. Sure, it seems that getting help should be the easy part but it took me down a long path that I want to help others navigate. I want this to be easier for those who seek assistance in coping with their PTSD. I want to be able to talk to others and let them know that it is not in weakness to ask for help as I struggled to do so for many years. Instead, this demonstrates great strength and empowers that person to make a positive change in his or her life. Our experiences will never go away so finding positive coping mechanisms is essential but too few recognize their symptoms and seek help. This isn't just about flashbacks, nightmares and memories. This includes addiction, self-destructive behavior, hyper-vigilance, isolation, anxiety, depression and, in far too many cases, su***de. Twenty-two a day. Driven With Purpose for PTSD Awareness will help to support outreach programs with funds raised during our events.

Love yourself

Ilas a lifelong teacher, a retired veteran and a father to 4, living a life of serving others is the norm. I used to think that loving myself was a selfish act. Trauma responses are weird and can distort the way we view life. It wasn't after my healing journey began and I started focusing on myself, that I learned that I can be there for those that I serve in a greater capacity if I loved myself. I found that I can be genuinely present while serving others. After years of work, the man I didn't like in the mirror became someone that I do love. I started making time for myself, my needs, my wants, my desires. I am worthy of of self love. As your mind shifts to this new mentality, you will find that you will detach from those that take advantage of your kindness and love, making room for those that truly appreciate you.

Life is short. It's even shorter without self love. I used to say that you cannot fill the glasses of others when your pitcher is empty. Stop, recharge and take on life as many time as you need and as often as you need to.

End of 2024

As the year ends, everyone should revisit their growth and failures.
The idea of failing means you found your weak spots, which means an opportunity to learn from your failure. This can mean an opportunity for growth.
The idea of growth is that you are still dealing with your mental health issues, but you have found success in handling them responsibly and in a positive, healthy manor.

You made it through another year. You had ups and downs. You are alive and making positive gains in life. You are not alone in your personal battles. Tomorrow is just another Wednesday, but it also can be another day to continue on your healing path. Change doesn't happen overnight, but the through 1000 tiny changes that start tomorrow.

Times of transition are strenuous, but I love them. They are an opportunity to purge, rethink priorities, and be intentional about new habits. We can make our new normal any way we want.

Kristen Armstrong

In 3rd Grade, we had a school activity where the entire class arrived at school before sunrise to watch it together. It continued with science related activities. It was one of those great memories that I can recall and remember the warmth of the sunrise and friendship.

As time went on, life created confusion and sunrises were often missed or gone unnoticed. While finding my healing, I found that intentional movement created more energy and positivity. Today, a work meeting was spent discussing that intentionally moving doesn't take away from your daily energy, but rather it adds to it. This can include going for a short walk, meditation, going outside for a walk around the block, reading a book, taking a 20 minute nap, getting properly rested or hydrated and taking in a sunrise.

Today's sunrise was pretty awesome!
