Last week, board members Tammy and David finished pulling invasive garlic mustard at Hague Preserve.

Perhaps you have spent time and effort pulling garlic mustard. Now what!? If you leave the pulled plants on the ground, they can resprout or produce viable seeds. If you burn them, the seeds could still spread because this type of herbaceous plant is resistant to fire. Typically, backyard composting doesn’t generate enough heat for a period long enough to destroy the seeds.

Take this extra step. Bag and seal the pulled plants inside thick black plastic. Put the bags somewhere they will get full sun and leave them for two or even three months. Once they’ve composted this way, you can throw them into your trash bins.

Hint: If possible, put the bags near the area where the plants were pulled. That way, if some seeds do escape, it is in an area where garlic mustard was already established, and a new area does not ‘contaminated.’

A big huge THANK YOU to members of the Grace Fellowship who visited the Hague Nature Preserve this spring to assist in the removal of invasive plants. Not only was it a great day of service for the Grace Fellowship team but also the team can now identify honeysuckle when they see it along roadsides, in parks and common areas and in their backyards. We are so grateful for their enthusiasm and hard work! It was a wonderful morning! Thank you again!

Plant Wars at the Hague Preserve: This field at the Hague Preserve, bordered on the East by Sycamore Creek and on the west by Hill Road, is the site of restoration to native prairie plant species. Starting last spring, the field was seeded with forbs and grasses to restore fertility after many years of farming. The plants occupying the field now contain a mixture of pre-settlement native species along with imported alien plants. Hague personnel will restore native plants in strips to allow birds and insects to remain. Plastic heats the ground to destroy the non-native species and opens areas for planting native prairie mixes this fall. Around the edge of the plastic, we planted stiff goldenrod, ashy sunflower, ox eye sunflower and swamp milkweeds to get a jump on flowering and seed production. This field should become a major attraction for native grassland birds and pollinating insects to feed and thrive in.
