⏳ 5:00 PM WEATHER & SANDBAG UPDATE
Due to continuous rainfall and more heavy rain forecasted this week, Public Works has been distributing sandbags at the City Maintenance Barn (309 Stephens St.).

Note: Distribution for today concludes at 6:00 PM tonight, as stated earlier in other post.

Limit 10 bags per household (with proof of city residency) to help protect main entryways.

🛑 ONGOING OVERNIGHT ROAD CLOSURES (Via Picayune Fire Dept.)
The Fire Department advises that the following streets remain closed due to high water and will remain closed throughout the night. They will be re-evaluated first thing in the morning:

Twisted Oak Dr. (Crosby Estates @ Bridge Crossing)

N. Beech St. (@ Long Bridge)

N. Beech St. (@ Inside Rd. and Westchester Dr.)

Westchester Dr. (@ N. Beech St.)

Inside Rd. (@ N. Beech St.)

N. Main St. (@ Boley Dr.)

N. Loftin Ave. (@ Katie Beck Dees St. to Roosevelt St.)

Washington St. (@ N. Loftin Ave.)

⚠️ PLEASE AVOID THESE AREAS: Drivers bypassing barriers are creating wakes that are actively pushing floodwaters into neighbors' homes. Please be patient and respect the boundaries so we don't cause further damage to residents' property.

🚧 TOMORROW: S. Haugh Ave. Closure (Wednesday, May 27)
Location: S. Haugh Ave. from Tate St. to E. Canal St.

Time: 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM

Reason: PRCUA sewer line repairs.

Let’s show some appreciation and love to one of our own! Congrats to Mark McCormick.

So proud of this guy! Mark is not only a friend to our family but he’s by far the best Emergency Trauma RN I know. If God forbid I ever need trauma response this is the face I wanna see saving my life. To work alongside him in the community we live in with the fire department is an honor. He’s steady, composed and professional! He definitely inspires this nurse. Way to go friend, very well deserved!

Respectfully,

Prayers for this community. This is a grim reminder the sacrifices we make but how important safety practices are within the fire service on every call and in route. Our county has felt the impact on the loss of one of our own in the past in route to a structure fire. The aftermath and devastation is life changing. Deepest condolences from us here to these families and fire department that is navigating this profound tragedy.

A central Alabama man who has early onset dementia may be lost somewhere in Mississippi, according to his family, and they’re urging people to help find him.

Robert “Bob” Landers left his home in Lowndes County, Alabama, Saturday morning to go to the driving range but he never came home, his family says. Landers, 88, last made contact with family around 2 a.m. Sunday, telling them he was lost somewhere in Mississippi. He reported not feeling well and was confused about his exact location or how to get home.

Anyone with information on Mr. Landers’ location is urged to call the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office at 334-548-6151.

The National Firefighter Registry for Cancer was launched a few months ago by the Centers for Disease Control.

Researchers will take a look at individuals’ personal demographics, including their medical history and work environment.

This data will be used to track cancer diagnoses among firefighters, compare cancer risks among different groups and evaluate how certain exposure can increase their risk. >>> https://www.wlox.com/2026/03/12/national-registry-could-help-reduce-cancer-risk-among-mississippi-firefighters/
