nueBOX is a residency program for emerging performance and media installation artists. We push the artist outside of the BOX, and bring the community inside. The program provides a selected group of talented artists with a place to rehearse, develop media installations, discuss works-in-progress, and showcase new work. Unlike traditional visual arts galleries or performance venues that provide spa

ce to showcase a final product, we focus on the process, and aim to provide opportunities for idea development and iteration. The program exposes the making of art by emphasizing discussion and observation of the creative process in a way that involves, educates, and informs both the artist and the community. There are several things that nueBOX provides local emerging artists that other arts organizations do not offer in Phoenix. The most important of provisions include free, clean, and safe space for exhibition, workshop, rehearsal, and performance space. Further, we provide artists with opportunities to receive valuable feedback through-out the creation of a new work. Members of the community will be encouraged to attend artist showings of works-in-progress and participate in Liz Lerman’s Critical Response feedback sessions. Our goal is for artists to find new ways of conceptualizing performance and media installation, and to create a participatory audience that is informed of the artistic practice.

Introducing our 2025-2026 Studio/LAB Resident artist: JP Alejandro

JP’s work is often described as emotionally resonant, layered, and communal. Audiences experience an interplay of intimacy and expansiveness—sometimes drawn into quiet, vulnerable moments, and other times immersed in collective energy. His work is both personal and universal, encouraging reflection on cultural identity, memory, and connection. It’s often described as poetic, physical, and interdisciplinary, combining rigorous movement with storytelling, ritual, and atmosphere.

Studio/LAB Resident Artists get a much longer residency experience, allowing more time to explore ideas and share their processes along the way. We are thrilled to have JP this fall, and can’t wait to host work-in-progress showings in the coming months.

Follow JP and for upcoming showings, workshops and feedback sessions!

ARTIST HIGHLIGHT: The Stevens
.rdno

Presenting both nights at the 2025 [nueWORK] Dance Festival at Third Street Theater

The Stevens are premiering their collaborative work titled: “No. 16 Just a Piece of Fabric” (an excerpt)

- This piece explores the ever changing landscape of how humans express themselves through clothing, specifically the blending of masculine and feminine. Both Stevens are also interested in exploring these themes through sound, referencing current pop music and its influence on expression. This being an excerpt, the final form of their evening length piece, will include storytelling and theatric elements to complete their vision.

Get your tickets to see The Stevens along with 14 more artists this weekend! Now available to purchase on our website and in our bio.

ARTIST HIGHLIGHT: DEPTH/Ellen Sickenberger

Presenting a live performance on Saturday 8/23
and a Dance Film on Sunday 8/24 for the:
[nueWORK] Dance Festival at Third Street Theater

DEPTH/Ellen will be presenting their live piece titled:
“To Catch Running Water” (excerpt)

-“You cannot understand life and its mysteries as long as you try to grasp it. Indeed, you cannot grasp it, just as you cannot walk off with a river in a bucket. If you try to capture running water in a bucket, it is clear that you do not understand it and that you will always be disappointed, for in the bucket the water does not run. To ‘have’ running water you must let go of it and let it run.” –Alan Watts
Attempting to “get the water of life into neat and permanent packages”, this piece explores greed and other fatal traits of humanity.

On Sunday, see their dance film titled:
“Fates”

-Inspired by Dante’s Inferno, the award-winning dance film Fates follows the journey of 6 women, dissecting women’s suffrage in America.

See both pieces of work this weekend! Tickets now available to purchase on our website and in our bio.
