This Memorial Day, the Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix honors and remembers all who gave their lives in service to the United States. We are deeply grateful for their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to our nation.
Today, we also remember one of our own: David Murdock, gifted Arizona musician, educator, composer, and former director of the Orpheus Club before World War II.
Before the war, David inspired singers and students across Arizona through his leadership and love of music. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941, he served as an infantry officer with the Army’s 3rd Division, 7th Infantry Regiment, fighting in North Africa and Sicily. Fellow soldiers remembered him not only as a courageous leader, but as someone who lifted spirits through music and singing even in the darkest moments of war.
On August 11, 1943, David Murdock was killed in action in Sicily while leading his men during combat near Malo.
As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, may we never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice, including the artists, teachers, musicians, and leaders whose lives of service extended far beyond the battlefield.
We remember. We honor. We give thanks.
