Read Better Be Better (RBBB) was founded by Sophie Etchart in 2014 in Phoenix as a response to Arizona’s literacy crisis. The state is ranked 45th in the nation for childhood literacy and 48th for PreK-12th education. Currently, 66% of 3rd graders from low-income families in Arizona do not read at grade level and often are unable to make the necessary transition from “learning to read” to “reading

to learn” by 4th grade. Students who do not read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school. But with proper reading intervention, there is an 89% chance that students who can read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade will graduate from high school, irrespective of socio-economic status. RBBB’s mission is to connect young readers and youth leaders to inspire a love of literacy and learning in order to create a society in which all children master the foundational skills necessary to become independent learners. The organization’s after-school program serves 2nd - 4th grade Readers who have been identified by their teachers as needing targeted reading intervention. The Readers are paired for a semester with middle - high school age Leaders. The Leaders are provided with ongoing training in implementing reading strategies, leadership, and coaching skills by RBBB Program Coaches, many of whom are education majors. Together the Program Coaches, Leaders, and Readers work to improve concentration, reading comprehension, and the enjoyment of reading. RBBB currently partners with 10 districts in 62 schools, serving a total of 3,968 Readers and Leaders across Maricopa and Pinal counties.

Welcome back to RBBB 101! 📙🌼 This week we're sharing our final lesson of Module 2: The Changemaker Continuum in Action!

In our last lesson, we learned how Read Better Be Better's continuum of programs supports K-12 students throughout their educational journeys and beyond. What do we mean by "beyond," you ask? Meet Amelia, an alum of our high school Pathway to Education Professions program. She is now an Art Education major at ASU!

Our Pathway to Education Professions program prepares students for careers in education through hands-on classroom experience. Pursuing careers as educators is one of the ways that Read Better Be Better almuni engage after their K-12 years in making Arizona's education system better for all students! Happy (future) Educator Appreciation Week, Amelia! 🩵🎉

Follow along every week for all things RBBB!

Read Better Be Better is honored to be selected as a 2026 Community Impact Grant recipient by OneAZ Credit Union and the OneAZ Community Foundation, receiving a $7,500 award in celebration of OneAZ’s 75th anniversary of serving Arizonans.💜

Since 2016, the OneAZ Community Foundation has provided more than $3.5 million in funding to nonprofits working to strengthen communities across Arizona. 🌵

This year, $360,000 in Community Impact Grants were distributed to 48 local nonprofits—thanks to OneAZ members who support their communities with every swipe. Each purchase contributes one penny to the OneAZ Community Foundation to help fund grants like ours.

This generous support allows Read Better Be Better to continue making an impact through our mission to equip youth with the skills to read and lead. 🤝

"Read Better Be Better really helped me figure out if I wanted to work with kids or if I wanted to be a teacher. It helped with my communication [skills] and my managing of my time." - Natalia Ramirez, Pathway to Education Professions program participant

Yesterday, we got to witness an incredible display of joy and pride at the ElevateEd AZ Annual Celebration. One of our Pathway to Education Professions program participants, Natalia Ramirez, was highlighted on the student panel, and Read Better Be Better was recognized as a 2025-26 business partner!

ElevateEd AZ coaches at high schools across the Valley have helped connect students with our Pathway to Education Professions program, where high school students engage in hands-on classroom experience to prepare them for future careers in the education field.

Thank you for this incredible partnership, and congratulations to Natalia and all of our program participants! 🩵🎉
