FQ Story Historic Neighborhood

FQ Story Historic Neighborhood The Story neighborhood is one of Phoenix's first historic districts. Its 602 homes date from the late 1920s and span a variety of architectural styles. Q.

Francis Quarles Story, for whom the neighborhood was named, was involved in numerous developments in early Phoenix, including the construction of Grand Avenue in 1887 and its subsequent streetcar line. He is also credited with the advertising campaign which made the Sunkist Orange famous. In 1920, when development of the F. Story neighborhood began, Phoenix had a population of 29,000. It was adver

tised as a streetcar suburb, being close to the Grand Avenue and Kenilworth carlines. The first houses were clustered by the streetcar line at the eastern edge of the neighborhood. As building proceeded westward and the auto became more common, houses began to feature detached garages and porte cocheres. The last development phase began in 1927, encompassing eighty acres from 11th to 15th Avenues, between McDowell Road and Roosevelt Street. Development hit its peak in 1930 with the construction of 133 new houses, only to falter as the Depression hit Phoenix. Construction declined, but by 1938, approximately seventy-five percent of the F.Q. Story Addition had been completed.

🔄 Plot Twist at the Capitol: HB2375 is BACK — now as SB1118!

After being blocked in the Senate last week, the same balanced, common-sense bill has been reintroduced as a strike-everything amendment to SB1118. This gives legislators another opportunity to support smart growth while preserving and protecting Arizona’s
historic neighborhoods from speculative demolition and incompatible re-development. SB1118 will be heard at the Arizona State Capitol:

⏰TODAY — March 31 | 10:00 AM

🏛️ House Appropriations Committee

📍1700 W. Washington, House Hearing Room 1

🚨 TAKE ACTION (60 seconds):
→ Log into the AZ Legislature RTS system
→ Select “New Request” and click the green “Thumbs Up” to SUPPORT SB1118
→ Comment: “I support the strike-everything amendment.”

Call Senator Carine Werner and THANK her for supporting historic neighborhoods and smart growth through the SB1118 strike-everything amendment. ([email protected],
602-926-3673)

This is a moment that matters.
We respectfully urge legislators to stand with Arizona cities, historic neighborhoods, and a practical path forward by supporting SB1118.

Growth and historic preservation: Arizona needs both!

This is our moment to keep a smart, balanced solution moving forward! It only takes a few moments of your time to make all the difference for Arizona’s historic neighborhoods!

Neighbors: Please join us tomorrow morning.
State Representative Sarah Liguori is holding a Community Coffee tomorrow — Sunday, March 15 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. This is an important opportunity for residents of our historic neighborhoods to show up, ask questions, and be heard.
HB2375 — the bill to protect historic districts from the unintended consequences of the Middle Housing law — will be voted on Tuesday in the Arizona House of Representatives. Many of us have written or called Rep. Liguori, but this meeting is a chance to ask her directly where she stands.
Please plan to attend. Please respectfully ask one simple question:
“Representative Liguori, will you support HB2375 and vote YES?”
Key points:
Remind her that legal staff of the cities of Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Avondale, Yuma, Bisbee, etc. have fully vetted HB2375 and those cities and others ALL support it.
Remind her she did not care about “unintended consequences” to historic neighborhoods when she voted FOR the Middle Housing law (HB2721) in 2024.
Remind her the 2024 Middle Housing law created new redevelopment entitlements that unintentionally incentivize speculative demolition and redevelopment in historic neighborhoods. HB2375 simply restores the ability for cities to safeguard their locally designated historic districts while managing growth in compatible ways.
A clear answer matters. Our historic neighborhoods deserve clarity, transparency, and representation.
Please come, bring a neighbor, and help ensure our community’s voice is heard. Respectful, engaged civic participation makes a difference.
**Sunday, March 15 | 9:30 a.m.**
Rep. Sarah Liguori Community Coffee
509 W. Hatcher
See you there.
