DID YOU KNOW: October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence affects millions of men and women each year.
Since the Violence Against Women Act passed in 1994, we’ve come a long way. This momentous legislation, led by [then Senator] Joe Biden, combined new provisions holding offenders accountable and providing programs and services for victims.
Between 1993 and 2010, the overall rate of domestic violence dropped nearly two-thirds and state laws have reformed to address various DV issues.

Only 12 days away from the big Battle!
Meet Your Contestants!
Last but certainly not least, your Host, Mark House:
Mark is an attorney at Becker & House, were he practices trusts and estates. Mark is also on the board of directors of the Girl Scouts, Arizona Cactus Pine Council, giving him an opportunity to be an advocate for girls and women. He is quite passionate about that advocacy at all levels. Mark’s daughter Darby was Audra’s best friend, and Carol was Allison House’s co-leader of the Girl Scout troop, so this event is very personal to him. In addition to his other qualities, he is an avid Katy Perry fan, and will be performing “Roar” for everyone’s entertainment.

Meet Your Contestants!
Regina Cobb: Regina is a dentist and a State Representative from Kingman, Arizona. As one of the first female presidents of the Arizona Dental Association, Regina was a trailblazer when it came to women in dentistry. She has also been a great advocate for women and girls in her time in the legislature. Dr. Cobb will be bringing a country swing to the event, channeling a little Shania Twain.

On November 12, 2013, Audra Sanders and her mother Carol were murdered by Audra’s father, Michael. You may remember this event; it was a local tragedy that made the national news. But the reporters did not convey Carol and Audra’s amazing strength, and their love for Girl Scouting, nor the lasting impact they made on my life.
Audra was a Girl Scout, and Audra’s mother Carol was the leader. For five years, Audra participated in all the Girl Scout traditions of selling cookies and going to camp, of course, but also donated time and resources to charities such as the Ronald McDonald House, St. Mary’s Food Bank, and St. Vincent de Paul. Carol was an amazing leader. She taught presentation skills and encouraged girls to use those skills to benefit the community. Once, the girls created a presentation that featured a fashion show of antique Girl Scout uniforms, music, and history, and performed it for a group of ladies in Sun City. The girls also learned real life entrepreneurial and marketing skills and put them into action during the annual cookie sales. In short, those five years in Girl Scouts gave all of the girls the courage to become the strong and accomplished women.
Carol’s wonderful work with our troop could not change the situation she faced at home. Carol had married the wrong man, and she was terrified of him. Michael was mean, and cruel to her and to their daughter. He threatened her family if she should ever try to leave him. He made good on the threat and killed Carol, my friend Audra, and Carol’s brother Tom Fitzpatrick that horrible day in November.
After the murders, we were all devastated.
The Girl Scouts had a luncheon two days later. The council’s executive director, Tamara Woodbury, spoke at the luncheon. She knew about the tragic events that had occurred. During her speech, she said the most amazing thing:
Girl Scouts is about encouraging and growing girls ‘upstream.’ It is about making them comfortable with who they are and what they can do. And, if we catch girls ‘upstream,’ then empower them with courage, confidence and character, we have a chance to change the course of their lives. Trying to empower women once they are adults and amid the ‘rapids’ is much more difficult, and rarely works.
Nothing will ever bring Audra, or her mother, back. However, we now have the wonderful opportunity to change the lives of other girls and young women by supporting the work of the Girl Scouts – Arizona Cactus-Pine Council, and the Bob & Renee Parsons Leadership Center for Girls & Women.
We plan to honor Audra and Carol by holding a Lip Sync Battle at the Leadership Center. The event is being planned for October 6, 2018. Our goal is to raise money to name a cabin in honor of Audra and Carol Sanders, so their legacy of strength and dedication to Girl Scouting will live on. This will be a large-scale event, drawing support from our community and reaching far beyond to touch the lives of girls throughout Arizona.
We are hosting this event in Carol and Audra's honor. We expect 200-400 people to attend the event.
