Central Phoenix Urban Ministry

Central Phoenix Urban Ministry Who? What? Our shared faith journey has led us to be intentional about serving our community and loving our neighbor in the name of Christ. When? Where? Why?

A local mission of churches of Christ (overseen by the elders of the Northwest Church of Christ)

We are asking God to transform us as we cross boundaries, intentionally serve our neighbors, courageously make disciples of Jesus, and build for his kingdom While we strongly identify ourselves as Christ followers; we also celebrate the fact that we come from diverse racial, cultural & socioeconomic b

ackgrounds. As you might suspect, weโ€™re still learning how to do that well. In any case, we work hard to live out Jesus' command to love others in concrete ways. As a missional community we hold various annual events and develop projects throughout the year that benefit our neighborhood. We also gather together on Sunday mornings; plus we have various small groups, in both Spanish and English, throughout the week. However, you will most likely find us serving those around us and sharing the good news of Jesus with those who are willing to listen. We have chosen to concentrate our efforts in the Northeast neighborhoods of Downtown Phoenix, specifically the Garfield Neighborhood (including both Verde & Edison Parks), the Greater Coronado Neighborhood, as well as Roosevelt Row, FQ Story and the ASU Downtown Campus. Therefore, our service projects and special events take place in these neighborhoods. In addition, all of our informal weekly gatherings are graciously hosted in homes and apartments in these neighborhoods. Because Jesus showed love by intentionally serving those around him, and ultimately gave his life for the whole world.

"Your Father knows what you need before you ask him." - Jesus (Matthew 6:8)

Have you ever experienced God providing something that you needed immediately after you prayed for it? While this is usually not the case, God will sometimes remind us that he is way ahead of us.

Last week, during our homeless street outreach, we prayed together for a couple of homeless friends who were in the hospital. Immediately after saying "In Jesus name. Amen!" one of those people walked up behind us having just returned from the hospital. It was so timely that everyone broke out into laughter. Then today, we were told by the same prayer group that the other person we had been praying for arrived back from the hospital before we had even made it back to our car on the other side of the park. But this time, they weren't laughing -- because they were completely blown away!

If faith is the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things not yet seen (Hebrews 11:1), then faith grew in the hearts our homeless friends that day. It reminded everyone there that God is already at work around us, even when we can't see or know the outcome. This is why we pray, not because prayer is powerful, but because God is already powerfully active in our lives.

Ready for summer break! We had a fun game night and pizza party for our last Tuesday Night Tutoring session of the school year.

We want to give a special "thank you" to Michael Chaffin for coming down every other week again this year as a tutoring volunteer (and CPUM board member).

If you would like to serve as a volunteer for our tutoring program next year, please reach out to us soon so that we can give you more detailed information.

We had our last On-Campus Bible Study of the semester at ASU on Tuesday afternoon.

We began this semester focused on various questions to diagnose our spiritual health, including: Are we continuously thirsting for God? Are we becoming more aware and concerned about the spiritual and physical needs of others? Are we more willing to forgive others? Do we still grieve over our own sin?

We also studied about moving beyond the elementary teachings and on to maturity in Christ, looking specifically at what fruit we are producing (Hebrews 5-6).

We studied all the passages Jesus taught the week leading up to his crucifixion.

Then, we did a brief introduction to the Book of Revelation.

And, finally, finished with an indepth 3-week study of vocational living, including: The preisthood of all believers, all work is God's work, service over self fulfillment, and walking in a manner worthy of our calling.

Five core students: Cruz, Angel, Miranda, Brandon and David attended almost every Tuesday afternoon study. I am continually encouraged by their hard work in school while attempting to live out their faith on campus.

We were able to provide emergency food assistance for Barbara today. She was recently let go after a work related injury, and had to take a lower paying job. She has a 21 year old daughter with Down Syndrome, and hadn't been able to get an appointment for a food box yet. She asks for your prayers as she gets back on her feet. I pray that this experience would draw her closer to trusting in God.

Today, John got a new pair of shoes that actually fit his feet! This was thanks to the generous donation from a friend who saw the original story and wanted to do more than pray for him. I think we can all relate to having to walk long distances in shoes that hurt your feet. We're all about lightening the load and making someone's day in the name of Christ. May God continue to help John see his value and worth.

Revolving sushi ๐Ÿฃ after Bible Study ๐Ÿ“–

Psalm 8 reminds us of Godโ€™s creative beauty and that we are connected to him through the acts of wonder and stewardship. It's the same beauty that makes astronauts shed tears of awe.

"When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are humans that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?" - Psalm 8:3-4

This afternoon's J.A.M. Kids Club was fire ๐ŸŒž but nothing a few water ballons and a breeze couldn't overcome! Plus, we got to learn about Jesus and his parable on the depth of forgiveness (Matthew 18:21-35).

Kevin and the helped explain the lesson through acting out the parable for the kids. We also made forgiveness spirals to help us remember to keep forgiving as God has forgiven us.

The next JAM Kids Club will be April 25 in Verde Park at 5pm. This is a volunteer based ministry we have been sponsoring in neighborhood parks over the last 13 years.

The Dwell Campus Ministry came for their annual Weekend Service Retreat. It's always an honor to partner with these incredible kingdom workers! The theme this year was "Saved for Good" from Ephesians 2:10.

The group started early on Saturday morning with cleaning, painting and yardwork around the historic 902 Missionary church building in front of our ministry space. Many of the kind neighbors came out to thank the group for all their hard work.

Later, the group made their way to Verde Park to connect with some of our homeless neighbors. They provided personal hygiene kits, pizza and prayer.

Made a people feel like God's masterpiece!

Also, thank you to the for providing the hygiene kits.
