It is National Tartan Day! A tartan is a patterned woolen cloth, typically used for kilts, and is associated with Scottish culture. The fire service’s history of bagpipes and kilts is rooted in Irish and Scottish heritage, which is why you see both as part of pipe and drum units throughout fire departments. Did you know Chandler Fire has a tartan? In 2007, when our department formed the Pipe & Drum as part of the CFD Honor Guard, it adopted the "American Heritage" pattern for our tartan.

Our members are community focused and when we see others doing the same, we do our best to support them. This is Noah and our crews learned that Noah was diagnosed at 18 months old with AML leukemia. He’s now been in remission for 10 years! Noah has made it his missions to give back to other children dealing with the same cancer he beat. This year Noah set a goal of giving 2000 cars to the kids undergoing treatment and splitting the donations between Phoenix Children's Hospital and Banner Children's Hospital. Chandler Firefighters Charities heard his story and decided we wanted to join his mission. Yesterday, Firefighter Cooper Cox, Firefighter Dan Morrow, Engineer Tyson Bruder, and Captain Mike Pallas of E2822 and BC Shane Kelber and Captain Chris Estes of BC282 presented Noah with $500 from to help reach and hopefully surpass his 2000 goal. Thank you Noah for letting us help your mission. We’re proud of what you’re doing.
➡️ The last slide is the point of contact if you wish to support.

For over a month, men and women have been visiting our stations to learn more about the fire service and the Chandler Fire Department. Across all the stations and shifts, our members have been eager to discuss what a career of service looks like. They have invested their time and experience to speak with our visitors, many of whom will be participating in the interview portion of our hiring process later this week. We value our interactions with the public and appreciate their interest in a career of service. We would like to wish the best of luck to those in our current hiring process.

Happy Presidents Day! Did you know that a few U.S. presidents had served as firefighters? In the 18th and 19th centuries, firefighting was commonly a community obligation. George Washington served with the Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Company in Alexandria, Virginia. He even purchased a fire engine for the company. Thomas Jefferson organized and served in a volunteer fire department in Charlottesville, Virginia. Millard Fillmore served as a firefighter in Buffalo, New York, and reportedly fought a fire at the Library of Congress. Lastly, James Buchanan volunteered as a firefighter in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. All demonstrated dedication to their communities and to their country. Today we honor them as well as all presidents who have led our country.

Congratulations to Captain John “Johnny” Rosales on a successful 35 year career with the Chandler Fire Department. Hired in 1991 as part of the academy “First Class, Johnny started his first shift on April 15th, 1991 as a firefighter on L283 when it was still around and Station 3 was still on Price Rd. Captain Rosales was pivotal in the careers of others as both a mentoring company officer and paramedic and a recruit training officer, sharing his experience delivered with a calm demeanor. He always gave back to his community through various projects like Habitat For Humanity and installing a new floor in the Salvation Army building downtown. Serving over three decades, he has worked all over the city with the most time spent at E282, E285, L288, and BC282. So long, that he even drove the old snorkel truck to a fire, blazing down the avenue at a blistering 35mph in the 90s! He tells us, “I definitely will miss the people I worked with at the fire department. I’ll miss sitting around the kitchen table, talking and enjoying each other’s company.” There is no replacing a firefighter like Captain Rosales. Enjoy a well earned retirement, sir. We will miss you, Johnny!
