Elections are open and we'd love for you to participate in voting for your new NAHJ board members. Please check your email associated with your NAHJ membership, for information needed to access the elections site.

If you're attending the NAHJ training conference this week in San Antonio, I hope you learn skills that you can use to strengthen your journalism and voice.

I hope you meet people who care about journalism that makes a difference, about parity in hiring and promoting and about producing coverage that accurately and fairly reflects our diverse communities.

If you're job hunting, I wish you buena suerte and would be more than happy to talk with you about career growth, practice for interviews and offer any additional support you're seeking.

A few reminders about voting: Only regular, academic and student members in good standing, and lifetime members can vote. To vote, your dues must have been paid by August 12th, 2019.

All eligible voters, except students, will elect NAHJ members for the national board positions. Student members will elect a student representative for the board.

This year, members will also vote on two proposed bylaw amendments. The first amendment proposes updates to the chapter bylaws to reflect how chapters operate today. The second amendment proposes an update to the role of the office of the NAHJ president. Please carefully consider these bylaw amendments.

Ballots close at 5:00 p.m. EST on Saturday, September 7th, 2019. The results will be tabulated and announced during the NAHJ Hall of Fame Gala that evening at the Excellence In Journalism (EIJ) and the NAHJ conference in San Antonio.

Puerto Rico governor Ricardo Rosselló’s resignation ‘imminent,’ local media reports

I spoke briefly with Jim Acosta at the 2017 conference. He was thoughtful, honest and fierce about the role of journalism in holding the powerful accountable. He checks political rhetoric with truth and fights for fairness. Yesterday, NAHJ stood up for truth, the First Amendment and our colleague Jim Acosta.

NAHJ President condemns attack of White House Correspondent Jim Acosta

“Washington, D.C. – President Hugo Balta of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) condemns the treatment of CNN’s Chief White House Correspondent and NAHJ Member Jim Acosta, during President Trump’s press conference and the decision to revoke his press pass. By harassing the journalist for simply doing his job and deeming Acosta as the “enemy of the people”, President Trump is engaging in a calculated effort of putting a target on this journalist’s back.

Additionally, this evening’s announcement to revoke Acosta’s credentials is the latest intimidation tactic by the Trump administration to silence the press. The accusation that Acosta “placed his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern” is not true. The video recorded at the press briefing shows him putting his arm on top of hers as she tried to take the microphone away. The video documented publicly, can be found here.

“The President of the United States is undermining American democracy,” said Balta. “Our association will commit to holding this administration accountable for any harm they cause to all journalists by these types of incessant attacks.”

“I have reached out to our colleagues at CNN to see how we can support Jim and the best way we can work together to help move forward,” Balta added.

Following two relentless years of rhetoric in an attempt to cause distrust for political gain, there is no indication Trump will lessen his affronts on the media. As journalists we must continue our commitment to our freedom and an unwavering pursuit of truth. We have a duty to hold government accountable and cannot tolerate those that target our journalists who are upholding the First Amendment.

NAHJ continues to stand with journalists everywhere who are simply doing their jobs on behalf of the public in pursuing truth and holding the powerful accountable for their statements and their actions.”
