in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote. Today marks the 106th anniversary of this monumental moment in American history.

DAR member Febb Ensminger Burn played a pivotal role in its passage. Her son, Congressman Harry T. Burn, was prepared to vote against the amendment, and the outcome hinged on his decision. Just before the vote, he received a letter from his mother urging him to change course: "Hurrah, and vote for suffrage!" she wrote, encouraging him to "be a good boy" and vote in favor at the last minute.

The next day, Congressman Burn cited his mother's advice in a speech explaining his decision to vote in favor, securing ratification and forever changing the course of American history.

Applications are now open for the 2026–2027 DAR Historic Preservation Grants! 🏛️

Each year, the DAR provides funding to chapters and local nonprofits working to preserve historic sites, safeguard documents, and protect cultural treasures in communities across the country.

One recent recipient: The historic Harrisville Train Depot was built in 1901 and is one of few remaining passenger train depots in Michigan’s Northern Lower Peninsula. Situated within viewing distance of Lake Huron, and alongside a working rail line, it’s a true forgotten treasure tucked away within the City of Harrisville. The depot is constructed of locally sourced cut limestone and was designed by esteemed architects in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. At 125 years old, the Depot's cut stone building is vulnerable to weather damage and other issues. This grant allowed the Friends of the Harrisville Train Depot to stabilize the roof structure and complete strategic interior work which was a key priority to bring the structure to baseline preservation before further damage was incurred.

Today, we honor the courageous women of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), whose service during World War II helped shape the future of military aviation.

More than 1,000 civilian women answered the call to serve by flying military aircraft, testing planes, towing targets, and ferrying aircraft across the country, freeing male pilots for combat duty.

On August 4, 1790, Congress authorized Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton's proposal to build ten cutters to protect the new nation's revenue.

The cutters were placed under the control of the Treasury Department. This date marks the officially recognized birthday of the Coast Guard.
