KJZZ Phoenix sat down with Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve Manager Aaron Mrotek to discuss the Sky Islands as a critical habitat for migrating birds. More than 270 species converge here, but climate change threatens these essential habitats across the region.

How can we protect these vital bird stopovers? Listen to the conversation at nature.ly/4dC8SGK 🐦

Public lands belong to everyone—not private interests.

83% of Arizona voters oppose selling off national public lands. When these lands are sold, access disappears. Fences go up and opportunities to hike, hunt and explore are lost forever. Let’s protect the places we all share.

Learn more about the threats facing our public lands and how you can help at nature.org/publiclands.

This , discover some of the feathered travelers of the Americas 🗺️

Every year, hundreds of bird species travel across the Americas, relying on Latin America’s rich ecosystems for survival, including resident and migrating species of Arizona. From coastal waters to forests, these habitats are vital stopovers on journeys spanning thousands of miles. Protecting biodiversity means protecting these connections that sustain life on Earth. 🎙️ New Episode of the Arizona Wildlife Federation Podcast!

We talk a lot about the importance of keeping public lands in public hands — but what would actually happen if federal public lands were transferred to state ownership?

In this episode, AWF’s Advocacy and Conservation Director Michael Cravens sits down with David Wells of the Grand Canyon Institute to break down the numbers behind a new policy report developed in partnership with the Arizona Wildlife Federation, Arizona Trail Association, and The Nature Conservancy.

The conversation dives into the fiscal realities of transferring federal lands to the state of Arizona, what it could mean for public access, wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation, and why the idea may not be as practical as some claim.

If you care about Arizona’s wildlife, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, and the future of our public lands, this is an important topic to understand.

It’s embedded in their DNA, as innate and natural as feeling hungry or tired. Twice a year, birds, insects, sea turtles, horseshoe crabs and other species heed signals from nature—a full moon, warmer temperatures, longer days—that indicate it’s time to find sources of food and water, safe spaces to breed and raise their young, and secure habitat that is warm and dry. 🌻💧

At Ramsey Canyon Preserve, located along the migration corridor for Mexican long-nosed bats, TNC protects agave plants and other important sources of nectar for the endangered species. A heartfelt thank you to Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management for presenting The Nature Conservancy and City of Mesa, Arizona Government with the Ponderosa Pine Partnership Award at the Urban Community Forestry Award Ceremony and 2026 Arizona Arbor Day celebration on April 24th. This award recognized our Reed Park tree planting as an example of a project helping reduce extreme heat and supporting urban tree canopy through partnership. We are delighted to receive this award and would like to thank additional partners who made this project possible: Arizona Sustainability Alliance, Unlimited Potential, Trees Matter and Watershed Management Group. The Reed Park greening was also supported by The Garden Club of America and The Arizona Columbine Garden Club.

Farms, ranches and forests support so much of what we need in our daily lives—food, clean water, jobs and healthy landscapes.

That’s why we’re grateful that the U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Farm Bill, moving this critical legislation one step closer to the finish line. The Farm Bill is the largest source of federal support for conservation and the people who steward our working lands in Arizona and the U.S. Conservation programs in the bill help private landowners voluntarily conserve, restore and manage their land in a way that benefits them, the communities where they live and people worldwide.

With House passage now behind us, we’re hopeful this momentum will continue as the bill moves forward in the Senate. Read our full statement: nature.ly/3QGdVhW
