I talked about this to a couple who were thinking of joining classes. The wife was motivated, and the husband wasn’t as much.

The wife ends up blurting out: “I just don’t want to ‘hope’ I’m safe!”.

Wow, I sat there and wished I could have given her an award for her honesty. Her husband leaned over to me, and to his credit said, “She’s right… we hope we’re safe with police, safe neighborhood and even good luck… but we’re not”.

Wow! Where is a second award?!

How do you know you’re safe? Here are some indicators:

You train in a realistic self-defense system regularly.
You are aware in public settings of people, exits, improvised weapons, etc.

You use down time to ask yourself “What if…?” questions if something does go down.

You’ve planned out safe places in your home.
You carry at least one weapon on you wherever you go.
You’ve planned out safer travel routes, and even safe places in hotels you stay in.

This is just a quick list off the top of my head of what truly safe people are like. They are good hints that you’re in the game, your awareness is high and you are prepared.

You don’t “hope”.

Huge difference.
