Today we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom, resilience, and hope.

At House of Refuge Sunnyslope, we believe every person is created in the image of God and has inherent dignity, value, and purpose. Juneteenth reminds us of the importance of freedom, justice, and the ongoing work of building communities where individuals and families can thrive.

As we reflect on this significant day in our nation's history, we are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and walk alongside those who are rebuilding their lives and pursuing a brighter future.

May we continue to extend compassion, foster understanding, and celebrate the dignity and worth of every person.

Happy Juneteenth.

Elizabeth’s story began in a place she never imagined her life would go.

Addiction had taken everything. What started small became something she could not function without. Eventually, she lost her home and found herself alone, living on the streets of Phoenix for nearly four years.

“We don’t know what day it is… we don’t even know the holidays.”

In that darkness, she believed her life was over.

“I just expected to be dead.”

But one moment changed everything.

“I’m not even dead yet… I’m not going to keep going on waiting to die.”

That decision led her to detox, then recovery, and eventually to House of Refuge Sunnyslope.

Here, she found more than a place to stay. She found healing, purpose, and a new life in Christ. She was baptized. She rebuilt her life. And today, she has been reconciled with her family and is walking forward with hope.

This is what transformation looks like.

Elizabeth’s story begins in a place of deep brokenness, where addiction, loss, and homelessness collided in a way she never imagined for her life.

Juan thought he had built a stable life but inside, he felt stuck, divided, and far from the foundation he was raised on.

After the loss of his father, everything came to a turning point. In a moment of desperation, Juan prayed, “Lord, if this is not for me, get me out of this situation. I feel trapped.”

Two days later, he packed his things with no plan, no destination, and one decision: to trust God.

“I’m just giving it up to God’s hands.”

That step led him to House of Refuge Sunnyslope, where the real work began. Letting go of old habits. Learning humility. Choosing obedience. And allowing God to rebuild what he could not fix on his own.

“I allowed Him to move in me… because I’ve always been in control of my whole life, and I’ve always made a mess of it.”

Today, Juan is walking forward with confidence, stability, and a renewed faith.

“I know I can trust in the Lord… He showed me the way.”

This is what transformation looks like.

Before Juan ever walked onto the House of Refuge Sunnyslope campus, his life looked stable on the outside, but inside he felt stuck and divided.
