YogaVida is a yoga "seva" (service) initiative to bring the physical, emotional and mental benefits of yoga to the Hispanic immigrant community in downtown Phoenix (a large population suffering from high stress, uprootedness, financial and legal worries and, unfortunately, sometimes rejection and discrimination). At the same time, the project extends the practice and benefits of yoga beyond the so

cio-economic area in which it has generally fallen in the first world. The main YogaVida programs are:
1) Weekly adult yoga classes, in Spanish, offered free of charge and with a therapeutic, health focus (underway since October 2013). Held at non-profit partner organizations including Phoenix Allies for Community Health, an inspiring volunteer-run clinic offering no-cost health care to the Hispanic community. Open to all Spanish-speaking adults in the community.
2) Yoga classes at the McDowell Healthcare Center's Spanish-speaking HIV-positive support group (a volunteer-run and funded support group), focusing on pranayama, stress reduction, moderate asana etc. Next on the agenda: find more Spanish-speaking yoga teachers, become a registered non-profit, bring in funding on a small-scale (crowdfunding) and a large-scale (foundation grants). Eventually, perhaps have our own yoga "home"..... Stay tuned!

Currently doing a FAMILY YOGA cycle at Maryvale Family Health Center (623-344-6955), Mondays 9am-10am. There’s room in the class (but only a few weeks left!), so please pass on the info to anyone who might be interested!

This is an interview with Paige Reeves, who launched YogaVida in October 2013 as a non-profit initiative to bring the mental and physical benefits of yoga to the Latino immigrant community in Phoenix, Arizona.

Heart-filled first class with the Spanish-speaking HIV positive support group “Más+”. Unveiling the theory and practice of yoga for a group of many different ages and physical conditions…co-creating a class seasoned with smiles, good-natured groans, and a few satisfied Savasana snores.

Looking for teachers/karma yogis!! If you love taking your yoga "off your mat", want to see it benefit different populations, and speak decent Spanish, please see our volunteer job posting on yogactivist.org, or contact us directly. YogaVida is an outreach program bringing the physical and mental benefits of yoga to the downtown Phoenix Latino community. It is incredibly rewarding work, and a chance to "pay forward" our own many blessings. Language and teaching support/training provided. http://yogaactivist.com/node/856

Things are picking up at YogaVida! Still continuing the weekly yoga classes in Spanish at PACH, and in contact with one of the city's largest community centers to teach classes in their facilities. Also discussing holding yogic technique teaching sessions (breathing, visualization, meditation, asana) to a Spanish-speaking HIV-positive support group at a downtown healthcare facility. More to come! x
