EVERY YEAR!!!!! πŸ”₯

The first week of June seems to end up being the start of our Cooper's Hawk influx --- temps are rising and they are just at that right age ... πŸŒ‘πŸ€’πŸ£

We've taken in over 85 animals so far today (by the way THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS MADE THE DRIVE HERE AND WAITED IN LINE PATIENTLY!) πŸ˜‡

Many of those intakes were these white poof-balls!!
Cooper's hawk nestlings are big enough right now that they are feeling cramped in their nests and the high temperatures just give them an extra boost to jump out for a cooler location.
Most of them land well and parents can keep an eye on them until they are fully flighted...
But many of the ones that have come to us aren't feeling great. Being bird- eaters, they tend to come down with a highly contagious Avian disease called trichomoniasis (or canker for short)
They can be treated and cured at Liberty.
If you find these birds on the ground, call our Hotline between 8am and 830pm daily to get suggestions about what should be done in each case

Not Just Birds!!!

🐍🦎

Liberty Wildlife takes in about 10,000 patients each year - but not all of them have feathers! 🐣

Some of the reptiles that cannot be released back into the wild become Education Ambassadors so guests can get a real close up look to the animals they might not see as often!

Volunteers Shaela, Jesus and Logan come each week to feed our snakes (yes, they are only offered food once a week - and they are all looking quite healthy on that diet!) We think Beetlejuice, the common kingsnake looks pleased with his digs after the team did a great enclosure refreshment this weekend!

And long time volunteer Viviana has a special place in her heart for Sergio, the black spiny-tailed iguana. While he's not a native to Arizona, he's found a home in our Interactive Room and Viviana recently moved him into a larger enclosure as he is continuing to grow with each month.

While we don't have lions, tigers or bears here, we have plenty of variety of animals for you to come visit during our Public Open Hours OR come take care of as a volunteer!!!

Volunteering at Liberty Wildlife is a rewarding experience.

Patrick has always been a nature and animal enthusiast but now he gets to be a part of the rehabiltation process first hand!

Even if you don't have experience, we can train you and find a place for you on any of our volunteer teams.

Currently we have the highest need for Rescue/Transport volunteers to help us travel the valley (and sometimes state) to pick up birds of prey and other larger animals that the general public cannot handle and bring them to our hospital.
Shifts run daily from 8am through 8:30pm!

Apply online on our website and join in our next orientation this month: https://libertywildlife.org/support/volunteer/

That's the way they became the FOSTER BUNCH!!!

Some of our baby foster great horned owls and the 4 amazing moms that are raising them!

Just a few of our foster babies that are learning from the pros!
None of the adults can be released to the while for a variety of reasons, but all the babies that come through Liberty Wildlife each year are raised by at least one of these females and they learn the spicy-ness that they need to survive in the wild once they are old enough to fend for themselves!!

"Kelvin" the great horned owl hasn't had too much to drink!

Volunteer Patti just happened to snap a picture at the right second to catch a glimpse of the NICTITATING MEMBRANE

This is a transparent third eyelid that many animals have to protect and moisten their eyes while still allowing them to see.

We hope you find a way to stay cool as the temperatures rise!!

Liberty Wildlife is lucky enough to have volunteers that come in on those extraordinarily hot days to shower down all our animals, like this juvenile great horned owl
