VFW Auxiliary 5540 We support and assist veterans and their families. We are one of the top ten providers of volunteer hours in the VA medical system.

The VFW Auxiliary is one of the nation’s oldest veterans’ service organizations and our members are the relatives of those who have served in overseas combat. We have 475,000 members representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign-based Auxiliaries who volunteer millions of hours and give millions of dollars to support veterans, military service personnel, and their families. We are a voice for veterans on Capitol Hill and are instrumental in assisting the VFW pass or block legislation that impacts veterans and their families. Every year, members fund-raise millions of dollars for charitable projects that benefit veterans and their families. We also provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for our nation’s youth. With more than 4,000 Auxiliaries, there is likely one in your area working to improve the lives of America’s uncommon heroes.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars' Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen audio essay entries are due October 31. This is less than ONE MONTH AWAY.

This year’s shared theme is “What a Veteran Taught Me About America.”

The VFW Voice of Democracy National first-place winner will receive a $35,000 scholarship; this contest is for students in grades 9-12. The VFW Patriot’s Pen National first-place winner will receive $5,000; this contest is for students in grades 6-8.

127 YEARS...AND STILL SERVING

On September 29, 1899, a small group of 13 Spanish-America war veterans joined together to form what would become the nation's largest and most dedicated group of combat veterans. Since August 1, 1914 they have been known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.

For 127 years the VFW has been unwavering in its devotion to our nation's heroes. Whether it's the fight for healthcare for veterans, education for veterans or legislation for veterans, NO ONE DOES MORE FOR VETERANS.

VFW members carry out this mission Every. Single. Day.

Today, September 14, 2026, is our 112th birthday! Since 1914, the VFW Auxiliary has been providing "Unwavering Support for Uncommon Heroes" through our volunteerism, fundraising, activism and acts of kindness.

Throughout the day we will be featuring memories, milestones and favorite moments from our current members, interspersed with a few meaningful quotes from our foremothers and past leaders. Thank you to all who participated by sending theirs in.
