VFW Auxiliary 5540 We support and assist veterans and their families. We are one of the top ten providers of volunteer hours in the VA medical system.

The VFW Auxiliary is one of the nation’s oldest veterans’ service organizations and our members are the relatives of those who have served in overseas combat. We have 475,000 members representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign-based Auxiliaries who volunteer millions of hours and give millions of dollars to support veterans, military service personnel, and their famili

es. We are a voice for veterans on Capitol Hill and are instrumental in assisting the VFW pass or block legislation that impacts veterans and their families. Every year, members fund-raise millions of dollars for charitable projects that benefit veterans and their families. We also provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for our nation’s youth. With more than 4,000 Auxiliaries, there is likely one in your area working to improve the lives of America’s uncommon heroes.

Today is the Fourth of July and VFW Auxiliary National Headquarters would like to wish you all a safe, special and happy Independence Day!

As America celebrates 250 years since the Second Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence by approving the text drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson, we look back on our history not only as a nation, but as an organization. For nearly half of that time, we have been providing Unwavering Support for Uncommon Heroes, and we are proud both of how much we've done and how far we've come, but of all of you, for your tireless work to better the lives of veterans and their families in your communities and beyond.

On July 2, 1776, the gathered representatives of the Second Continental Congress officially voted to declare independence from Great Britain and King George II. Six days later, on July 8, the Declaration of Independence was read aloud to the public in what is now known as Independence Square in Philadelphia, which kicked off a celebration that lasted well into the evening.

As we recognize our semiquincenntial today, we leave you with these words: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
