Camp HERO is an intensive twenty hour training designed to teach the principles and skills of community organizing to le***an, gay, bisexual and transgender activists and their allies. Drawing on techniques honed for decades by progressive social movements, Camp HERO teaches empowerment, team building, leadership development and grassroots organizing skills.

Camp HERO will gather some of our movement’s best thinkers and organizers to conduct an intensive grassroots organizing curriculum. Workshop topics will include “Developing Strategies and Building Coalitions,” “The Nuts and Bolts of Organizing,” “Finding Your Voice: Telling Your Story” and more. The training will also include concrete skill-building sessions tailored to the specific needs and interests of participants.

HERO HAS WALKED THE WALK. NOW IT’S TIME TO TALK THE TALK.

In the beginning, we were angry. We were collectively pi**ed and had nowhere else to turn. HERO took that anger to the streets – and 693 miles later – marriage equality became a reality in Arizona – we won! It took 7 years, 114 cities visited, 693 miles walks and countless conversations to make marriage equality the law of the land. Although we have realized our initial goal, we realize the work of equality is far
from over.

We’ve walked the walk. Now it’s time to talk the talk. We transitioned from the Arizona Right to Marry Walk to the Equality Walk; and now we are transforming the Equality Walk into the EQUALITY TALK. Our pilgrimage of 693 miles walked in the name of equality called attention to the dramatic chasm of inequality when it comes to LGBTQ Arizonans.

HERO has always been about grassroots power and now is the time to capitalize on this moment of opportunity – training communities to create equality in their own communities. HERO’S EQUALITY TALK will be a STATEWIDE EFFORT to ensure that all Arizonans have the freedom to fully be who they are and be treated equally under the law.

HERO’S EQUALITY TALK will focus on training communities to create local capacity for equality. HERO

offers these certified trainings:

• LGBTQ 101 – basic cultural competency training [60-90 minutes] geared toward police departments, school administrations, medical and behavioral health settings
• Advocacy 101 – fundamentals of advocating for equality

• LGBTQ History – broad-brush review of LGBTQ 20th-century history

HERO’S EQUALITY TALK will also include a one-day Camp HERO – workshops and trainings geared towards communities organizing for change. Now is the time for communities to create equalities in their hometowns.

HERO’S EQUALITY TALK will hold nightly Story Vigils at city halls or other public areas where the community can gather in solidarity – with candles – and share stories. Through training and public action, we can build a strong fabric of community.

Together, we will realize equality and justice for all. Share strength. Build power. Know hope.
