The U.S. Air Force Reserve’s 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, known as the “Hurricane Hunters,” flew into Hurricane Melissa’s eye on Monday to gather data for the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Melissa was an exceptionally powerful Category 5 hurricane that made landfall in Jamaica and Cuba in late October 2025. It is tied as the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in the Atlantic basin based on wind speed (185 mph), and is tied for the third-strongest based on pressure at landfall.

Before any mission, there’s prep—and Austin got hands-on with the action!

With pilot Bruce “The Lion” leading the way, Austin was able to get up close and personal with the aircraft, doing checks and ensuring everything was ready for takeoff.

He attended his mission briefing with his amazing service dog Violet 🐶 and his supportive mom by his side.

Austin learned all about aviation basics, safety, and the WWII-inspired tactics he’ll use on his upcoming flight. Stay tuned for more looks behind the scenes!
