How do you take out your trash?

If you drive through my neighborhood on garbage day,
Every homeowner puts their trash container by the curb the night before
And, after it’s collected and emptied, we have to bring it back onto our property.

Trash is normally collected mid-morning so if you’re home most of the day,
Or in and out a lot, you need to listen out for the garbage truck or
Risk making multiple trips to check and see if it was collected.

But there’s one neighbor of mine who has a unique system
That takes the guessing out of this chore.

Every week, without fail, when I drive by her house around 7am
It’s impossible not to notice the newspapers
Hanging out of each side of her garbage can.

Genius, no?!

Most of people have no problem taking out their trash.
It might take them a bit more time to but they can figure out when it’s done.
For some reason, though, the regular way doesn’t work for her.

For this lady, taking out the trash is too hard to do on her own!

It got me thinking-
We all have one type of trash or another that builds up within us.
Fears, anxieties, sadness… the normal emotions that we experience
Through the normal ups and downs of life.

But sometimes it can get to be too much- our emotional bins get heavy
From a buildup of challenges that become too hard to bear.
Or maybe a single scary or traumatic that has the same paralyzing effect.

We need relief.
We’re at capacity and need to empty our bins;
The emotions are too strong for us to carry on our own.

Our emotional bin get heavy and full and needs to be taken out.
And, if it’s too hard to empty on your own,
There’s no shame in turning somewhere else for help.

Most of the time we can manage it on our own.
But, when it’s a bit too heavy, there are people to whom to turn.
There are times that a professional is needed. There’s no shame in that.
But in most cases, though, you don’t need to go that far.

I love reading books with short stories or small lessons
That give inspiration and lessons for life.
Or- I’ll connect with a friend who has a good listening ear.

Talking through your challenges helps you feel so much better!

And, when I’m feeling strong, I like connecting with friends
Or others who might be going through a rough patch.
My listening ear might be just exactly what they need….

You and I can be an outlet, helping others bear their emotions
As they navigate a crisis or challenge in their life.

You can be their newspaper and help them clear their “trash”!

Who was the Rebbe? What’s his connection to me?

Didn’t the Rebbe pass away- why do we talk about him as if he’s alive?
Today marked his 30th Yartziet (anniversary of passing)
And I’d like to try and explain by way of a modern-day parable.

There’s an app that’s popular with teenagers these days.
It’s called BeReal and, in its own words,
Its purpose is to “share your real life photo with your friends.”

I know what you must be thinking. It’s what I thought, too.
You’re wondering- Why do we need an app for that?!
How many of those can there be? Why do we need another one?!

You’ve heard of the big ones;
Facebook, SnapChat, Instagram…
Millions of people use them to (over-)share all aspects of their daily life.

In truth, though, most people aren’t sharing their real lives.
Filters, props and staging make people look better than life;
They’re actually showing fake versions of themselves.

And the followers looking at the photos and
Watching the videos think that these friends and
Influencers are living the dream.

They then become uncomfortable and sad;
A picture of how life is meant to be is painted
And people starting wishing theirs was like that, too.

But it’s not real life. It’s a distortion of reality.

If you’d peel off the added layers of added light and if you’d
Be able to see all the added effects you’d see the real person behind the lens
And you’d be surprised to see how different they really looked.

This isn’t only true with how we share ourselves with others.
Often, it’s how we view ourselves, too.

Our true self is the Soul- a holy and perfect G-dly being.
Each one special in its own way with distinct, unique abilities.
And the soul wants to express itself; it truly wants to shine.

But when the soul comes down to this world
It gets put into an “app” – the Body-
And the two of them, together, have to navigate the challenges of life.

Real life can be similar to how it is on Instagram-
The Body acts as a filter and
The Soul can’t be itself.

But sometimes we’re lucky; we remember that we’re G-d’s child.
We believe in our potential- the difference we can make.
We can bring meaning and holiness to ourselves and to those around us.

While it’s not always easy to remove the filter of life we have help.
There’s a person who made it his mission to help us uninstall the “old app” …
and switch to living life through “BeReal” instead!

That person was the Rebbe-
Who saw each of us on the Soul-level.
He wasn’t intimidated by the body or by the challenges we face in life.

He recognized the greatness of each and every soul,
Saw the unique abilities each of us has
And believed that each could be successful in our mission in life.

And every interaction of his was focused on this idea-
He gave constant encouragement, and to some he even demanded:
You are great. You have it in you… You can do it!

He helped those in his camp, those with different worldly views and
Even those who didn’t want his help. Gender, race, religion or religious observance-
He saw the G-dliness in each of us and inspired us to see it, too.

And he continues to do so to this day.

There are many times more who are connected to him after his passing and it keeps growing by leaps and bounds.
Through his followers and emissaries (the Shluchim, Chabad Rabbis) around the world
His teachings and inspiration connect millions to him and he continues to enrich and inspire all our lives.

So, if you’re not satisfied sharing a “real life photo with a friend”
But also want more moments of “real life” yourself-
Connect with him by studying his teachings and allow him to get you in touch with your soul.

You can do so online, join a local class
Or purchase books with his teaching-
There’s a wealth of resources available.

But I’ll throw one more at you-
Each week I try to study at least one teaching of the Rebbe,
Which I then record and share with my friends.

I’d be more than happy to share it with you, too.
Just reply in the comments or message me-
Let me know that you want to be inspired!

Recently, two of my kids had appointments the same day.
One of them had a routine doctor’s visit- nothing serious.
The other, though, needed a procedure done.

The first was a breeze.

We drove to the doctor’s office and
The appointment was quick and uneventful.
I was barely needed in the examination room.

The second one, though, was much different.

My child was EXTREMELY nervous and scared.
He kept imagining something going wrong,
and was worried it would balloon into something much worse.

Thankfully I was there and fully present.
I consciously put my phone down (he quickly grabbed it!)
And he knew that I was there, completely focused on him.

I can’t say I solved everything…
The numbing shots were still painful and the doctor still had to do her thing.
But, his anxiety was tempered just because I was there.

Because he felt me in his corner,
someone who understood his angst.
He wasn’t alone… there was someone who recognized his pain.

Have you ever had a medical crisis;
A short- or long-term issue that needed to be resolved?
If you thankfully haven’t, I’m sure there’s someone close to you who has.

One of the hardest parts is the loneliness
That comes from feeling like no one understands
What it is like to be in middle of the crisis or illness.

You look like everyone else but internally you are very different.

The sun rises but for you it’s dark.
Planes fly, cars zoom past, people go about their day.
But to you, the world is moving in slow- motion.

You don’t know if you’ll have another normal day ever again.
Your sense of security was shattered the moment you heard the
Diagnosis come out of the doctor’s mouth.

So while it looks to most people like the world is fine,
That everything is normal and life goes on-
For you it just came to a screeching halt.

You’re like the person often seen on the side of the road,
Stranded and with the hood up. Often scared and usually
Wondering if and how they’ll reach their destination.

Sometimes, though, people do stop and help.

They see you and see that you’re in distress
And they try to get you back on the road.
And even if they can’t- they spend some time on the side with you.

And when they do, the world seems to come into focus again.
There’s someone there with you- you’re not alone, after all!
You can relax a bit and even give yourself a moment to breathe.

And that break from your new reality and your new normal
Can be enough to help push you through the fog.

We gave out “Hugs in a Box” care packages this Chanukah, as we do throughout the year. Seems like they’re on the mark!

If you want to get in on the hug (group hugs can be better!) see the first comment below.

You might see two new cars in their driveway,

The nice neighborhood they’re in or the business they run.

And you might make judgments based on what you see.

You think you can tell what’s going on in their lives.

But how you see it isn’t necessarily their reality-

It may be very far from how it seems.

Because everyone has a story.

And, like a book, we can’t always tell

What the story is like just by looking at the cover.

You can’t really know what they’re going through...

And you definitely can’t tell what’s going on inside another’s mind or heart.

Chanukah is the holiday and miracle of light.

It reminds us how, despite what one might be facing,

Just a little light can remove so much darkness.

Looking at the 5th candle of the Menorah- the point is brought home.

We start with one small flame breaking through the dark-

And just add a small bit more each night.

At first we don’t see much difference or change

But suddenly the small flames combine and we notice

How the Menorah has more lit candles than dark!

The darkness might still be there- it might stick around

For some time. But the light definitely breaks through;

It’s presence is strongly felt and softens the pain!

We see the darkness all around us.

There’s the teenager, Erin, who’s suddenly paralyzed and the doctors don’t know why.

She desperately wants to be able to hang out with friends

But getting out is too hard and she gets more down each day.

Or the Arons, who are worried for their kids.

One needs specialized surgery that can only be done out of town

And they need to leave the others at home, alone for a few weeks.

And I’ll share one more- an Israeli who’s been here a couple of times.

He needs another procedure but his insurance changed.

Tomer, his father, is worried that they won’t be able to come back.

But there are rays of light.

We call them the JCN Angels and Superheroes- friends who give of themselves

To bring out smiles, give a bit of comfort and maybe even some hope.

They brighten the day for Erin, the Aron family and Tomer…

And let them know that they’re not alone.

The Angels and Superheroes bring light to those facing darker times;

They help dispel some of the loneliness and

Give others strength to face the hardships ahead.

I hope that you’re inspired by the Menorah to become an Angels or Superheroes yourself.

All it takes is sharing your light with those you know

Who might be going through a rough patch.

Listen to their story and offer your friendship and support.

You’ll make a real difference and push away

Much of the darkness that they’re feeling.

Be their miracle- be their hope and light!

Close your eyes and imagine:... being in the hospital for a week without knowing why you aren't feeling well. ... needing to have daily rehab after a nasty fall or accident.... facing ongoing medical challenges and not having anyone who really understands how you are feeling and what you are going through.

Now: ... Close your eyes and imagine sitting on the beach in Hawaii, with a loved one or friend, soaking in the sun and relaxing. ... Feeling good about yourself. Smiling; happy, whole and content.

Would you give that same feeling of meaning, purpose and even a few smiles to some of those facing major medical challenges? Those battling illness alone?

And- you can enter a raffle to win a week-long stay ON THE BEACH in Hawaii!

Who knows- you might get a two for one- caring for others and also some self-care!
