Freemasons
A Freemason is a man who has taken an obligation to uphold our timeless principles of Brotherly love, relief, and truth. Beyond these basics, being a Freemason means so much more. A Freemason is a man who is committed to bettering himself and his community, having taken a solemn vow to help and mentor his Masonic Brothers do the same. A Freemason is a man eager to be part of something bigger than himself, with a reverence for history, compassion in his heart, and a desire to create a better future.

There are three degrees in Freemasonry: Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason. Most men advance to the level of Master Mason, some over the course of months; others may accomplish this goal over years. But once a man has taken his first obligation as an Entered Apprentice, he is, once and forever, a Freemason.

Freemasonry is the largest, oldest and best-known gentleman's fraternity in the world. Historically, it is based on the Medieval stonemason guilds who built the great castles and cathedrals of Europe. Mythologically it is founded upon the building of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, as told in the Old Testament of the Bible. Modern Freemasons likewise use the tools, traditions and terminology of those earlier stonemasons as allegories for building Temples in the hearts of men.

At its core, Freemasonry is simply an attempt to make the world a better place, one man at a time. For each man, it can become as simple or as complicated as he himself desires.

It's said that we are a secret society. We do indeed have secrets—secrets that each individual man has to discover for and about himself.

It's not for everybody. It never has been, and was never meant to be. That's the point.

Maybe it's for you.

The Mason- Whether ideal or real speculative or practical, represents a builder. King Solomon Temple is a symbol of man, and the building of the Temple everywhere referred to in Masonry means the building of individual character. The design on the tracing board are the principles of Justice, equity, and right in conformity with which a Noble character can alone be built, and social order maintained. The Lodge itself symbolizes man, as does Solomon's Temple. The Master not only symbolizes King Solomon but the rising of the sun in the east, in other words. The light of conscious intelligence in man

Chief Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea) is the first known Native American Freemason. A Mowhawk, Brant served as the principal chief of the Six Nations. He joined Hiram's Cliftonian Lodge No. 447, London, England, in 1776. Following the Revolutionary War, Bro. Brant moved to Ontario, Canada, where he served as Worshipful Master of his Lodge in 1798. Here is a great definition of Freemasonry taken from the Grand Lodge site.

Masonry is many things to many people. Many years ago in England it was defined as a system of morality, veiled in allegory, and illustrated by symbols. It is a course of moral instruction using both allegories and symbols to teach its lessons. The legends and myths of the old stone cutters and masons, many of them involved in building the great cathedrals of Europe, have been woven into an interesting and effective way to portray moral truths.

In Masonry, the old tools and ways of the craftsmen are used to help dramatically portray those moral truths. For example, the 24 inch gauge and the common gavel. Just as the ruler is used to measure distance, the modern Mason uses it as a reminder to manage one of his most precious resources: time. And, as the gavel is used to shape stones, so it is also the symbol for the necessity of all of us to work to perfect ourselves.

One modern definition is: Freemasonry is an organized society of men, symbolically applying the principle of Operative Masonry and architecture to the science and art of character building. In other words, Masonry uses ageless methods and lessons to make each of us a better person.

Thus, Masonry:

has a basic philosophy of life that places the individual worth of each man high on its pedestal, and incorporates the great teachings of many ages to provide a way for individual study and thought.
has great respect for religion and promotes toleration and equal esteem for the religious opinions and beliefs of others.
provides a real working plan for making good men even better.
is a social organization.
has many important charitable projects.
has a rich worldwide history.
is a proven way to develop both public speaking and dramatic abilities and provides an effective avenue for developing leadership.
