Karla’s experience in our skill-building workshop was illuminating. Despite being a self-described seamstress, she learned a new technique using our sewing machines, as well as learned how to construct one of our wallets — something she had never done before. Karla recommends the workshop to other people experiencing homelessness as well, as it is a good way to learn, earn and stay occupied and off the street.

Karla was evicted from her home while she was in the hospital recovering from a violent assault. She has lost everything, and currently stays at a nearby shelter.

Despite the challenges she’s faced sharing space with strangers and the brutality of living on the street, Karla has found it best to stay busy. She’s engaged in volunteerism for several months now, and just completed her first workshop with us where she learned how to build a wallet, as well as operation of our sewing machines.

Karla is doing the hard work it takes to end her situation and get her life back.

We didn’t overthink this one. That’s exactly why it works. Hand-stitched card sleeve, donated leather, made by participants. Your back pocket will thank you. Your chiropractor will not.

Encouragement. Confidence building. Empowerment. That’s what A Thousand Ladders aims to provide, at very least. We want our participants to grow and to flourish.

Listen to Florentino speak about his experience and the power of encouragement in our latest video on our YouTube channel.

Florentino couldn’t get words out when he first came to us.
Not because he had nothing to say. Because no one had ever made it safe enough to say it.

That’s what the support group gave him. A room where his voice was welcome. Where people listened. Where showing up and speaking up was enough.

He’s in Arkansas now, building a career. And he talks. A lot.
We think that’s everything.
