An update from leadership on MSJ Phoenix...

Hi friends,
I hope you are all doing well. I wanted to give an update and insight as to why there has been a lack of engagement with this group over the past few months.

I started this chapter at the end of 2020 with the intention of making really important things happen in Phoenix where we so desperately need an organization like Moms for Social Justice. Then in January I found out there were going to be some changes to my job which left me and my family at a crossroads. I ended up finding a really incredible opportunity in Denver and will be relocating there in July.

I started this chapter as the only member of the leadership team and figured I would meet others who could step up and help out along the way. I definitely didn’t expect or plan that I would be moving out of state but now here we are! I’ve been overwhelmed the past few months after starting a new job, raising a tiny human, and trying to prepare for a big move, so I struggled with putting the time into this group especially knowing I would not be able to follow through with anything I started.

And that’s why you haven’t been seeing anything from this page over the past several months. I’ve been working with the main chapter, MSJ Chattanooga, to figure out what the future of MSJ Phoenix looks like. However, without someone to step up into a leadership role and take over we’re pretty much at a stand still.

I just wanted to be transparent with y’all and let you know what has been going on. It was really difficult for me to decide to take this opportunity in another state because I had just started this and didn’t want to let everyone down so I hope everyone can understand my decision and that it was not taken lightly!

If you are interested or know anyone who would be interested in taking over leadership of MSJ Phoenix please let me know! ❤️

Best,
Traci

Tonight, the Mesa City Council took a historic step and passed an LGBTQ+ inclusive non-discrimination ordinance. This ordinance will fully protect LGBTQ+ families and individuals from discrimination in public accommodations, employment, and housing in the City of Mesa. This model ordinance is the result of visionary leadership by the Mayor and City Council members, years of collaboration between city leaders and stakeholders.

Tonight, every Mesa resident will go to bed knowing that their home, their city, is a place where fairness is valued, and that Mesa is open to all.

In prioritizing a Department of Justice request over one from state lawmakers, Cuomo says a "void" of information was created. But all the numbers reported were accurate, he said.

Scapegoating is a tactic historically employed by powerful regimes to place the onus of suffering or struggle on a marginalized group. By directing fear, frustration, and anger at a particular group rather than channeling energy into proactive solutions, not only is that group in increased danger of violence and discrimination, but the entire population continues to suffer from lack of unified action.

Asian Americans are feeling the effects of scapegoating due to the dangerous rhetoric blaming China for Covid’s existence and global spread, with acts of violence against them at an all-time high. We denounce all acts of hate, racial profiling, and scapegoating, and stand in solidarity with all Asian Americans.

Wow... this proposed measure would be a step in the right direction of working to combat the racial wealth gap in place as a result of systemic racism. Let’s urge our senators to move this bill forward!!

The proposed measure would create a federally-funded account that children could access when they turn 18 for education, housing or business ventures.

In honor of , we'll be highlighting books that we love that feature different Black characters from history - for all ages! Up first is an excellent book for young children - Ron's Big Mission. We've included this title in many of our elementary school classroom libraries through the Classroom Libary Project. Here's the synopsis:

"Nine-year-old Ron loves going to the Lake City Public Library to look through all the books on airplanes and flight. Today, Ron is ready to take out books by himself. But in the segregated world of South Carolina in the 1950s, Ron's obtaining his own library card is not just a small rite of passage--it is a young man's first courageous mission. Here is an inspiring story, based on Ron McNair's life, of how a little boy, future scientist, and Challenger astronaut desegregated his library through peaceful resistance."

Hi everyone!!! I am so excited for this chapter to grow into a collective of moms/parents/people fighting for an equal and just world where all generations can thrive!

We’ll be doing our first meetup in March - an outdoor socially distant social hour where everyone can meet (safely) and share some ideas we have in mind for the group.

Drop a comment below if you know of any organizations in the Phoenix-metro area that are in need of volunteers/support!

The formation of this chapter represents hope. A word many of us have been unfamiliar with for a very long time. We didn’t get here overnight and we won’t get justice overnight. But we are here and we are ready to do the work.

We will fight for the future of every child with the same passion that we fight with for our own.

Join us and let’s make sh*t happen!!
