Fourth of July Fireworks Safety Tips and 2026 Event Schedule

The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal’s Office (LCFR-FMO) want you and your family to have a safe and memorable Fourth of July holiday. Every year fireworks send adults and children to the emergency room and cause thousands of serious injuries. The safest way to enjoy the holiday is to leave the fireworks to the experts and attend a professionally coordinated fireworks show. If you choose to use fireworks, know the risks, proceed with caution, and follow these tips!

* ONLY USE legal fireworks purchased from a permitted retail stand.
* DON’T USE ILLEGAL FIREWORKS. Nothing that “shoots, explodes, or flames,” etc., is permitted for use.
* USE FIREWORKS OUTDOORS, far from structures, vegetation, or flammables. Keep hose or water bucket nearby.
* MAINTAIN constant adult supervision. NEVER allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
* PLACE FIREWOKS ON STABLE GROUND, ensuring the device will not tip over. DON’T light fireworks in your hand or container and never aim or throw fireworks at anyone.
* SOAK SPENT FIREWORKS in water before discarding into a fire-proof container, outside, away from your home.
* NEVER TRY TO RELIGHT A DUD or malfunctioning firework.
* CONTACT the LCFR-FMO if you need to surrender or dispose of unused fireworks.

Please be sure to clean up any grass clippings!

Know under Virginia Code § 18.2-324, it is illegal to deposit grass clippings on a highway if they create a hazard, which is a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine. Clippings create slick, "black ice" conditions for motorcycles and bicycles, making immediate removal necessary.

Reminder - Open Burning Prohibited from May 1 to Sept 30.

🚫🔥 The Fire Marshal's Office reminds community members and visitors that open burning is prohibited in County and the incorporated Towns of Leesburg, Lovettsville, Middleburg, Purcellville, and Round Hill, between May 1 and September 30, 2026.

These regulations prohibit open air fires or open burning with the following exceptions:

• Campfires, no larger than three feet in diameter by two feet in height and used for cooking purposes, are exempt from these prohibitions, provided they are not within 50 feet of any structure.
• Portable outdoor fireplaces and chimineas are not considered open burning but must be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and shall not be operated within 15 feet of a structure or combustible material. Single-family, attached and detached, homes are exempt from the distance mandate but are strongly encouraged to follow this fire safe practice.
• On a year-round basis, open burning (including campfires) is always prohibited in the town limits of Lovettsville, Middleburg, Purcellville, Round Hill, and all subdivisions ("urban or built-up areas") throughout the county.

Fire Marshal Disclaimer: The Loudoun County Fire Marshal may impose regulations, at any time, based upon complaint, atmospheric or other environmental circumstances, to restrict or extinguish any fire that is otherwise permitted according to these guidelines.

Violations and Penalty: Any person who violates the fire code could be convicted of a Class 1 misdemeanor, which carries a penalty of a fine up to $2,500 and up to a year in jail. Further, if convicted, a person may be required to compensate the locality for the full cost of fighting a fire.

Questions regarding open burning regulations should be directed to the LCFR Fire Marshal's Office at 703-737-8600 or www.loudoun.gov/openburning.
