After decades working in Northwoods lumber camps, retired lumberjack Fred Smith began creating the Wisconsin Concrete Park in Phillips, Wisconsin, in 1948.

Over the next 16 years, Smith built 237 life-size and larger-than-life sculptures from concrete, decorating them with glass, mirrors, stones, bottles, reflectors, and other found objects.

Across his property, lumberjacks, pioneers, animals, historical figures, and characters from local lore come together to form an imaginative panorama of Wisconsin life and American history.

He continued working until a stroke in 1964 ended his sculpting career. He died in 1976, but his Concrete Park was preserved by the Kohler Foundation, Inc. and eventually became a public park.

Today, the Concrete Park remains open to the public in the Northwoods, while some of Smith’s works are also on view at the Art Preserve in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Our next Contestent is Miss Alexya Ebert,

My name is Alexya Ebert, and I am a 17-year-old senior at Wisconsin Virtual Academy from Washington County, Wisconsin. Snowmobiling has been part of my life since birth through the New Fane Kettle Riders Snowmobile Club, and I have been a member of the Tombstone Pickerel Snowmobile Club since around age five. Both clubs have played a huge role in my life, and I am incredibly grateful for the support they have given me.
Outside of snowmobiling, I enjoy four-wheeling up north with friends, spending time with family, playing with my three dogs, and crafting. No matter the weather or season, being up north is my happy place. After high school, I plan to pursue a degree in elementary education because I love working with children and helping them grow. I am also part of the Teen Advisory Council for Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
I was born with two rare conditions, neonatal Marfan syndrome and gastroschisis, which have led to significant time in the hospital throughout my life. These experiences have shaped who I am and strengthened my desire to help others find opportunities to participate in the activities they love.
I applied for this role because I want to give back to the snowmobiling community that has supported me my entire life. With both of my parents having served on a snowmobile club board, I hope to follow in their footsteps someday. My goals are to encourage more youth to get involved in snowmobiling and help make the sport more welcoming and accessible to individuals with disabilities or limited abilities. To me, snowmobiling is more than a sport; it is a community that creates lifelong friendships, lasting memories, and a sense of belonging. I hope to pay forward the support I have received and help make snowmobiling more inclusive for future generations.
