Barbour County Office of Emergency Management, in coordination with the Barbour County Sheriff's Department, Barbour County Ambulance Authority and Barbour County Schools, will be conducting a planned Active Threat Rapid Evacuation Drill on April 29, 2026.
This exercise is designed to help students and staff practice safely and quickly evacuating a large common area during a potential emergency. The drill will take place during simulated lunch periods and will be closely supervised by school officials and first responders.
๐น Important Information:
โข This is only a drill
โข No weapons will be used
โข Students will be guided step-by-step throughout the exercise
โข Emergency vehicles and personnel may be visible on or near campus
During the drill, students will practice moving to designated safe areas and will receive additional guidance on real-world safety actions, including continuing to a secure location and communicating their status with a trusted contact.
This exercise also allows local emergency responders and personnel to evaluate communication, coordination, and response procedures in a controlled environment.
๐ This type of training is conducted in accordance with West Virginia State Code ยง18-9F-10, which requires schools to perform emergency preparedness drills.
We understand that safety drills can raise questions, and we want to reassure our community that student safety and well-being remain our top priority. Extensive planning has gone into this exercise to ensure a safe and supportive environment.
