Calling all community cat caretakers, TNR groups, and cat lovers! PAWS is hosting a ✨FREE TNR clinic✨ for outdoor community cats on Wednesday February 25.

Spay/neuter appointments are available at PAWS’ Grays Ferry and Grant Avenue wellness clinics, and include FVRCP and rabies vaccines, flea treatment, and a mandatory ear tip. By offering lifesaving spay/neuter services at no cost to caregivers, which is possible thanks to the generosity of donors, PAWS aims to support their efforts and reduce the number of kittens born outdoors, especially as spring approaches.

You don’t need to be a Philadelphia resident to book an appointment for this event! Space is limited, so contact our clinics to reserve your spot today:

🐾 Grays Ferry (South Philly)
2900 Grays Ferry Ave
[email protected]

🐾 Grant Avenue (Northeast)
1810 Grant Ave
[email protected]

*Please note: Cats must be in traps (this event is not for owned/pet cats), and post-op recovery space is not available at PAWS. Please make sure you are able to safety recover your TNR cats indoors after surgery!

**Help spread the word by tagging a community cat caretaker, TNR group, or cat lover below in the comments! ⤵

--UPDATE: the bill has passed! 👏 --

Philadelphia residents: we need your support!
Bill 250989 passed a committee vote on Tuesday, February 3, and will go before full City Council this Thursday, February 12. Taking action is simple: please send two emails asking council members to vote yes on this bill. Convenient email forms are available here: acctphilly.org/takeaction

-Why does this matter?-
The number of dogs entering Philadelphia’s city shelter has reached an unsustainable level. In January alone, ACCT Philly took in 679 dogs, the highest intake they’ve seen since 2016. Bill 250989 would establish a temporary (three year) pause on dog breeding within the city, giving shelters and rescues a chance to catch up with the overwhelming number of dogs already in need of homes.

The bill does not impact adoptions or state-licensed breeders. While it isn’t a cure-all, it would provide much needed relief to our shelter and rescue community and give authorities stronger tools to address backyard breeding, a significant issue in our city.

This moratorium not only reduces the number of puppies being born, but also improves the well-being of mother dogs. You may remember Diamond Pink, one of the dogs we rescued from ACCT last year. She suffered the devastating effects of repeated breeding, including cancer. Diamond underwent multiple surgeries to remove both mammary chains in order to reduce the risk of the cancer spreading. Had she not been bred repeatedly and had been spayed at the appropriate age, her risk of developing this cancer would have been close to zero.

It cost our rescue more than $10,000 to save Diamond’s life. Every day, dogs like Diamond enter our city’s shelter. They are loving, deserving animals but they are also far more difficult to place due to the extensive medical care they require and the strain they put on already limited rescue resources.

Philadelphia City Council heard testimony Tuesday on a bill to pause puppy breeding within the city’s limits for three years. The proposed ban’s goal is to reduce animal shelter intake and to protect animal health.

Urgent: PAWS' pet pantry is severely low on supplies, and we need your help! Food insecurity continues to be an acute issue for many Philly neighbors — especially those with pets — and recent snow and prolonged freezing temperatures have made an already difficult situation even harder.

300 bags of dog food, cat food, and litter are needed to keep us stocked for our Valentine's Day pantry event, and Philly’s pets are counting on you! By sending even one bag of food or litter from our wishlists, you’ll be having an enormous impact and ensuring pets can stay with their families where they’re loved.

There are a few ways you can help:

🐾 Send through our Chewy wishlist: phillypaws.org/chewy.

Stay safe this weekend, Philly!

As cold weather moves into Philadelphia, please take extra steps to keep pets safe and warm:

🐱 Keep cats indoors. All indoor cats should stay inside during cold weather, even if they normally enjoy roaming outside in warmer months.

🐶 Limit outdoor time for dogs.
Dogs can go outside briefly for potty breaks and exercise, but should stay indoors the rest of the time. Northern breeds like huskies may tolerate longer outdoor time, but they should always be supervised.

🏠 Outdoor must have proper shelter.
If a dog is outdoors for extended periods during the day for any reason, they must have a dry, draft-free shelter that’s large enough to move around in, but small enough to retain body heat.
👉 ACCT Philly has straw available to help insulate outdoor shelters.

🧥 Dress for the weather.
Dogs with short coats may benefit from a sweater, even on short walks. If you’re bundled up, consider whether they need to be too.

🐾 Protect their paws.
After walks, wipe down your dog’s feet to remove rock salt and de-icing chemicals, which can irritate paw pads. Try to do this quickly so they don’t lick their paws...a warm washcloth works well.

☠️ Antifreeze warning.
If you use antifreeze, store it where pets and other animals cannot access it. Antifreeze is deadly poison to animals.

🗣️ Speak up for animals.
If you see a pet left in the cold without adequate shelter and feel comfortable doing so, inform the owner, they may not realize the danger cold weather poses.

🚨 See an abandoned animal during a Code Blue?
Call (267) 385-3800, then press 1, or email [email protected] with as many details as possible.

ACCT Philly enforces the Code Blue ordinance and can issue citations (violations can result in fines). If cruelty or neglect is suspected, cases are referred to PSPCA. Please be patient, our officers are responding citywide in all weather conditions.
