In June 1972, Independence Historical Trust was established to support the preservation, interpretation, and public enjoyment of Independence National Historical Park.

More than 50 years later, the Trust continues that mission through educational programs, volunteer initiatives, preservation projects, and enhancing the visitor experience throughout America's most historic square mile.

These photos offer a look back at the Trust's early days and some of the work that continues today.

There have been several occasions in which the Liberty Bell was struck and the sound was recorded. One very special occasion was on D-Day, June 6, 1944, when the Liberty Bell was struck by Philadelphia Mayor Bernard Samuel seven times, one time for each of the letters in the word "Liberty" in a nationwide broadcast to announce the allied invasion of Europe on the beaches of Normandy, France.
