Small Things Philly

Small Things Philly We believe that Small acts of kindness have a huge impact on our community. The Small Things Story

OUR START:
Small Things was first called Easter Outreach.

Small Things works with local partners and community leaders to alleviate poverty by improving food security and collaborating to address other community needs. MISSION:
Our mission is to provide community-based organizations with the resources necessary to support their communities and to connect with their neighbors in a tangible way. VALUES:
Connection | We strive to build real, lasting connect

ions by helping our partner organizations meet the tangible needs of their communities. Dignity | We believe that every individual we support deserves to be treated with respect, empathy, and love regardless of their situation. Integrity | We believe that having integrity in all of our actions and in all of our partnerships. Impact | In everything we do, we want to ensure that our efforts have a positive impact on our community. This ministry had a very simple goal: to feed some of Philadelphia’s hungriest families on Easter Sunday. In early 2010, a zip code in North Philadelphia was named the hungriest in America. Realizing that this neighborhood was right in its backyard, a team from Liberti Church East felt compelled to act. That spring, they raised some money, put an ad in the local newspaper, and gathered volunteers the day before Easter to distribute 100 dinners. While they knew this wouldn’t fix Philadelphia’s hunger problem, this one meal was a tangible way of celebrating the resurrection of Jesus and offering hope to friends and neighbors in need. Ten years later, Easter Outreach, led by Pastor Vito Baldini, extends throughout Philadelphia and into Chester, Norristown, and Camden, as well. In 2019, over 75 community partners and 2,000 volunteers helped distribute 10,000 Easter dinners in the greater Philadelphia area

PIVOTING DURING COVID-19:
When COVID-19 struck, the ministry brought together area churches, community organizations, and food providers like Philabundance to launch a rapid COVID-19 response. Having trusted relationships across the city allowed Easter Outreach to provide over 100,000 people with 1 million meals by the end of Summer 2020. It was clear that the organization had expanded beyond a seasonal day of service, so the name Easter Outreach was changed to Small Things. This new name reflects the fact that change often starts with one small step, one small gathering, one small sacrifice. The name recognizes that Small Things can change the world. Why Small Things? Why the name? Because we believe this is how change happens. We believe that every act of service matters, no matter how small. Small things like packing a box, delivering a meal, or taking time to talk and get to know another person is how we all change. By mobilizing people to reach out and care for one another, we believe that we can change lives and transform communities. Change takes time and small steps that we take together can change lives and lead to tangible impacts in our community.

"Doing it together."

That's the heart of it. In this clip from the Looking Forward show, our Executive Director Vito Baldini shares why our markets are more than distribution sites. They're spaces where neighbors show up for neighbors, where community happens in real time.

Vito was joined by Sylvia, our Program Coordinator for Workforce Development and the More Than Food Program, to talk about our More Than Food Program, which moves beyond the grocery bag to open real pathways toward stability for the families we serve.

💛 To our volunteers: thank you!

National Volunteer Appreciation Week (April 19 to 25) may have come and gone, but we're still feeling the gratitude. To mark the week, every volunteer who showed up for Small Things received their very own ST t-shirt or drawstring bag, a small token for the very big things you make possible.

Swipe through to see some of the faces behind our mission: two incredible volunteer groups at the warehouse, plus our friends from Drexel University lending a hand at the Fairhill Market.

Whether you're sorting in the warehouse, serving at a market, or showing up wherever you're needed, you ARE the small things that add up to something big.

Look who stopped by 👀

Brandon Graham () came through the Small Things Market this week, and the energy was unmatched. The Eagles legend spent real time learning about how we're feeding our Hunting Park neighbors: asking questions, listening, showing up the way he always does.

Brandon has been a 'Timoteo Big Brother' for years. Timoteo Sports mentors kids through sports right here in the same Grace & Peace Fellowship building that houses the Market.

Retired from the field, but clearly not slowing down when it comes to his community. Grateful, Brandon.

We want to take the time to appreciate the people who show up with open hearts and helping hands. Our volunteers are the reason meals are served, smiles are shared, and hope reaches those who need it most. Your time, energy, and compassion never go unnoticed and this work simply wouldn’t happen without you! Thank you for choosing to give back and uplift others. 🤍

We need volunteers! Help keep shelves stocked, lines short, and spirits high at our markets in Fairhill and Hunting Park.

Small Things Market is more than a free grocery store; it’s a place where our neighbors get the food and resources they deserve with dignity. We’re looking for volunteers to join the crew on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays!

What you’ll do:
- Be a Personal Shopper: Help guests navigate the pantry and find exactly what they need.
- The "Behind the Scenes": Restock shelves, keep things organized, and keep the market sparkling.
- Community Connection: Check guests in with a smile and a warm welcome.

We’re heartbroken to share that our beloved mascot, Pumpkin, passed away on Thursday 🤍🐾

Our girl came into our lives through our partner, New Leash on Life, an organization dedicated to giving second chances by pairing rescue dogs with incarcerated individuals for training and rehabilitation.

Pumpkin was rescued from a breeding situation and found her forever home with our warehouse supervisor, Jack Kennedy, and his wife. Over the years, she became a source of joy for so many of us.

We’ll miss her deeply, and we’re grateful for her, for the memories, and for the continued impact of New Leash on Life in both human and animal lives.

Rest easy, Pumpkin 🕊️
