Every spring and early summer, female diamondback terrapins leave the safety of New Jersey's salt marshes to cross busy roads and causeways in search of sandy nesting sites. Too often, they are struck by vehicles because they look like small rocks or road debris.

By simply slowing down and staying alert—especially near marshes and causeways—you could save a mother terrapin and the next generation she carries.

🚨 𝗨𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗧: 𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗥𝗔𝗣𝗜𝗡 𝗖𝗥𝗢𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡 𝗜𝗦 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘! 🐢💔

Please slow down when driving across our causeways and roads near the marshes.

Right now, female diamondback terrapins are making a dangerous journey from the marshes to higher ground to lay their eggs. To reach their nesting sites, many must cross busy roadways—and far too many never make it.

What makes this especially tragic is that terrapins are incredibly difficult to see from a moving vehicle. At driving speed, they often look like a small piece of debris, a clump of seaweed, or a dark object on the pavement.

Every adult female lost is a devastating blow to the population. These turtles take years to reach breeding age, and each nesting female carries the future of the species. Without successful nesting and hatchling survival, local terrapin populations can decline rapidly.

⚠️ 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒅𝒐:

✅ Slow down on causeways and marsh roads.
✅ Stay alert for turtles on the roadway.
✅ If safe, avoid them.

The Margate Green Team was delighted to bring environmental education to the 3- and 4-year-old students at the JCC Early Childhood Education Preschool. Steve Jasiecki, Chair of the Margate Green Team, and Sustainable Sherri Lilienfeld coordinated a special presentation by ACUA Outreach and Education Specialist Alexis Demitroff, who taught the children about recycling, reducing waste, and protecting our natural resources.

A special thank you to Brian Adler, Associate Executive Director of the JCC, for helping make this program possible.

By teaching children about sustainability at a young age, we are helping to build lifelong habits that support a cleaner, healthier future for our communities and our planet. Every small action adds up—and today's young learners are tomorrow's environmental stewards! 💚

New Jersey is leading the nation with one of the strongest “𝙎𝙠𝙞𝙥 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙛𝙛” laws in the country — and it’s a simple change that can make a BIG environmental impact. 🌎

✅ What the new law means for consumers
✅ What restaurants and businesses need to do
✅ How this reduces plastic pollution
✅ Why businesses can actually SAVE money
✅ How small behavior changes create cleaner communities

If you order takeout, own a restaurant, or care about reducing waste, this is worth understanding.

Driving Local Action at the 2026 New Jersey Sustainability Summit 🌍
I had an incredible time connecting with forward-thinking leaders at the 2026 New Jersey Sustainability Summit in Holmdel this past week. It is always so inspiring to collaborate with people who are dedicated to making real, actionable changes for our environment and future generations.

Here were my top takeaways from the day’s sessions:

💧 Upgrading Stormwater Infrastructure: We dove deep into navigating NJ’s new MS4 rules. As coastal communities grow, updating our stormwater management is absolutely vital for long-term resilience.

🍎 Tackling School Food Waste: An eye-opening session with Sustainable Jersey for Schools! The amount of food wasted is staggering, but by getting students directly involved, we can dramatically bring those numbers down.

🏗️ Construction Dust Containment: My personal highlight! It was amazing to hear Assemblywoman Alixon Collazos-Gill and my collaborator Lois Kraus (Beyond Plastics NJ) discuss the Construction Dust Containment Bill. Seeing local efforts championed at the state level proves that we can successfully curb microplastic and silica pollution in our communities.

A huge thank you to all the speakers, Sustainable Jersey, and leaders like Senator Bob Smith for supporting these crucial initiatives. State legislation plus local effort truly equals collective impact!
